story category Bay Area Named Best for Broadband Penetration
Two recent surveys say so

In the most recent annual report on broadband penetration released by Scarborough Research, the San Francisco Bay Area beat out former leaders San Diego and Boston to attain the number one spot. It holds the lead as a result of household high speed Internet edging over the sixty percent mark. A similar report released earlier this week by the Bay Area Council also says that San Francisco is the nation’s leader in broadband connectivity. However, the argument has been made that it doesn’t matter how great the best of our cities are in this nation, we’re still way behind other parts of the world when it comes to broadband connectivity.

Good penetration, but

I lived in San Francisco for the summer of 2006. While the penetration rate might be high and it may have full coverage, the actual service isn't so hot. Comcast's systems were totally outdated and way oversubscribed so you'd never get advertised speeds, and AT&T DSL wasn't so great either. The only option was to go with a CLEC DSL provider like Speakeasy and you got pretty ripped off price wise.

While I loved San Francisco and want to move back for good in the future, it'll be tough to leave my 15/2 (20/5 when they get around to updating Delaware) fiber service for $50 a month here on the east coast...

Let's see... about 3-4 times a week now. About 365 days a year for the first 7 years starting 1994.

Anyone voluntarily choosing AT&T or Comcast deserves what they get.

Bay area served by Paxio FTTH

Those of us lucky enough to be in Paxio's territory can get 100/100 for under $100. It rocks!

Good for you, not good for anyone who doesn't live in a Gated Community that Paxio only services

Hi Dadkins -- you know these posts just draw me out like moths to a flame. I'm still laughing about my "gated community". Hope your Comcast is still holding the higher speeds you got awhile ago!

I live here

As a resident, I know this to be the perfect example of the devil being in the details. I have 3/512 for $30/mo. with a reliable CLEC,(Sonic.net), but that price may change after twelve months. That's the best I can do for DSL because, while within a mile of two CO's, AT&T has looped their cables to make me 2 miles away by wire. I had AT&T Yahoo DSL for a year. It was surreal. "Service" consisted of denying the reality that I was reporting while handing me off back and forth from India to Cal.

Comcast is $67/mo. to start for the 16M service. I don't know what it is after a year.

So, on the ground, availability and value isn't that great. Also, AT&T is one of the telcos that has adopted the "go slow" approach to fiber optics so the future isn't sunny.

Sonic.net is working on delivery of ADSL2+ in the Bay Area. 20 COs are slated to go live within a year.

Its true...

This area does have the best broadband connection. I just moved 10 minutes from SF here and unlike the north east coast which is a much older area historically, you would think that deployment would be at its highest, not so. Over here there are plenty of choices and concentration is way higher than back east.

Hmm...

of course the Bay Area Council would say that they are the best!

We might have the highest level of penetration, but the speed truly sucks...

at&t: 1.5/3.0/6.0

$20/$30/$40?

comcast: 6.0/16.0

$52/$62?

comcast is higher priced for the same stuff.

in my area, i get 1.5 and comcast...

the bay is definetly NOT as good as some other areas...

edit: totally unrelated comment related to "penetration"
