Belkin Bundling Zone Alarm W/Routers
Existing customers can download 90-day trial
by Karl Bode Tuesday 28-Mar-2006 tags: hardware · security · software
On the heels of yesterday's discussion about our users' favorite firewalls, Belkin announced today that they'll be bundling the Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite with all of their routers (see press release). If you already own a Belkin router, 90-day trial downloads of the Zone Alarm software will be available via your router's firmware page.

Trial?

I hate that. Either make it free for 1 year or don't offer it at all. After 90 days it will just bitch 'buy me!'

Re: Trial?

And most people won't pay attention to the fact that they NO LONGER have protection.

Just like the trials of Norton or McAfee that come with new computers. People think "Yea, I got AV protection.", when actually their subscription for new updates ended 2 years ago. I have actually ran into that with people, more than once.

Re: Trial?

I've seen that many times. The sad thing is people with broadband most likely can get free security suite from their ISP.

And with the increased $39.95 added to the price for the 1 yr sub, Belkin routers with gather dust on store shelves.

Didn't Linksys

do this a few years ago with the ZA firewall? I remember the integration between the two wasn't stellar.

Re: Didn't Linksys

I've seen one of those routers, and they later dropped the intregation in future firmware.

Yeah ok...

I'm more interested in a firmware upgrade for the router to fix issues not a firware downgrade...

Isn't it kind of contradictary

To offer a software firewall with the product you are selling is supposed to provide the same protection via hardware. I mean some would even say better protection (firewall that is) with a router than software firewalls.

I bet a lot of people here don't even use a software firewall if they are behind a router..

Well, I may be one of the few, but I have a router or two and I always use a software firewall. I have more then one computer hooked up and if something should get into one, the firewalls on the other computers should stop most things crawling around.

I've tried the cox security suite. (I have cox internet) I don't know what other ISPs are providing but I really didn't like it. It would continuously ask if it was ok to update anything to do with the security suite. I poked around it to turn off some of the notifications but it is too dumbed down to be of any use.

Right now I use McAfee Security Suite. As a DoD employee I get free use of McAfee Security Suite, to include all future updates. That is until my enlistment is up or they change their policy. It may not be the best but at least it's better then nothing.

I'm not a computer guru like some, but I've read here and there that the best security is to have both a hardware and a software firewall.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 90-day trial will begin shipping with Belkin Routers in May on the Installation CD. After the trial ends, you can purchase the non-trial version

That's not peace of mind - that's spam for ZA.

Damn paid advertisements are everywhere.
