Bell Canada Speed Hikes
Heads for 3mbps to compete with cable
by Karl Bode Tuesday 16-Dec-2003 tags: dsl · prices · bandwidth
Is response to competition from cable providers, Bell Canada has announced their Sympatico service will see speed increased to 3Mbps - without any additional cost - beginning in 2004. Users already at 3mbps will be bumped to 4mbps. Discussed in our Sympatico forum and verified via press release, both 3 and 4mbps DSL customers will also see upstream speed increases to 800kbps at a price tag of $44.95 per month.

The move comes after Canadian cable provider Rogers last week announced they'd be delivering 3Mbps to customers. The company had floated between 1.5mbps and 3mbps in the past, but decided to mirror the 3mbps standard push that began in the United States. Rogers upstream speeds also recently jumped from 192kbps to 384kbps.

Bell Canada's speed shift is an obvious response to Canadian cable providers' push to 3mbps, and U.S. subscribers can only hope that domestic telcos eventually follow the same strategy. Bell Canada is, as explored recently in an article, giving customers exactly what they want (sans price reduction) by including upstream increases as well.

"More than half of our customers use the Internet for instant messaging, online games and sharing digital photos - all activities where speed in both directions matters," said Charlotte Burke, senior vice-president, Consumer Internet Services, Bell Canada. "By doubling our speed and increasing our upload performance, we give our customers a much larger door to the Internet and all it has to offer."

In May of 2002 the company wasn't holding that door quite so open, as the decision was made to impose 5 gigabyte per month download caps and raise rates, resulting in a significant ruckus among users. The decision came long before bit or download caps became popular among cable providers. At the time, the company claimed that 92 percent of its subscribers used about 1.5 gigabytes of data per month. Even the company's "high speed ultra" tier faced caps of 10 gigabytes per month.

Bell Sympatico helped its case by eventually raising their base downstream speeds from 1 to 1.5Mbps, and abolishing bit caps altogether this past July. This latest change is a particularly impressive attempt to keep cable providers at bay in Bell Canada's territory.

Unless, of course, you're "too far" from the CO - like me. I guess the west end of Canada's Capital is considered the boondocks by the good folks at Bell, where their DSL service is "unavailable". :-(

Actually they're setting the trend with a DSL provider competing with cable via speed increase and not vice-versa.....

Stop being so ignorant. Second of all, we're not following your trends at all.

geesh.. try to bring some humor to everyones morning and get my head bit off. No one has a sense of humor these days.

*On-topic* I just wish providers here in the states would take a lesson from the upstream raises. More isp's need to do like cavalier and have 960/960 packages for $25/month.

Canadians have a fantastic sense of humour. But like everyone else, we don't like being talked down to.

That is pretty good. Does that service include the modem, or do you buy your own.

Whoa that is some really nice speed and a really great price. Though I have to wonder how many people can actually take advantage of the speed increase their offering for dsl. I would imagine only a medium to small percentage can take advantage of that because of the limit on distance. We can only hope that companies over here in america take the hint and up the bandwith to their users.

Let's see if America could follow those prices for that kind of speed though! 4Mbps/800kbps for $44.95 CDN (~$30 US)

Re: Former Canuck

Actually, 3Mbps for 44.95 Canadian. The current 3500/800 called Ultra is 69.95 Canadian right now. So you will pay 44.95 for 3000/800 or 69.95(unless they lower the price) for 4000/800.

Ultra seems like a rip off now..

They should increase the upload to 1Mbps for Ultra at least, and download at least 5Mbps for that price.

How much do you pay for broadband in the US? The trend north of the border is that we pay a lot less than in the US and generally have much better performance. One example? My cable ISP regular broadband (3 mbps) goes for $40.20 cdn including taxes with a 12 months commitment. That's $30.43 in US funds at today's rate. How's that for setting trends bubba?

The trend started with Cogeco upgrading its standard tier to 3Mbps before any US providers.

Unlike Comcast, the upgrade was painless, and there were no complaints about congestion after the upgrade.

I guess that is because Cogeco tested it first.

Yes they will. ALL ADSL modems connect to a Bell CO or Remote DSLAM, so they all connect at the same speed where technically possible(if you're not too far away).

That is unless you have a leased line from another provider that goes directly to them.

That (potentially) will be grief for the re-sellers.

If their customers all get an upgrade in speed, here's hoping their pipes to the net are big enough. If not, Bell which had time to plan and upgrade, looks good, and these other isps look bad to their customers.

Re: Any idea when?

Back to the topic, thank the gods for Bell. I never got even close to 3 mbs with Rogers, and I never will, especially since they refuse to give DOCSIS modems to old users (hell they're still giving crap to new users). Stability in speed is also a big problem, so Bell is bascially going to win this round.

Big Deal Here in Nova Scotia, Eastlink Cable has had 5 megs down and 1 meg up for a long time. Now for those Alliant Users I would be hopping mad stuck at 1-1.5Megs down and 640k up and degrading outward from the cell base station.

Rogers doesn't know WTF they are doing. They went from >4Mbps when they were with @Home, to 3Mbps, to 1.5Mbps then back to 3Mbps.

Re: Those telcos...

The fact is that Rogers didn't know what they were doing. They were a relatively new ISP, as @Home did everything for the company. But as Rogers had to step up and learn to be an ISP, they fell short. The had debts, and were loosing money. Taking the 3mbps connections and putting them down to a 1.5 mbps connection allowed Rogers to gain customers, as the network was less bogged down. Now that Rogers has finally got things sorted out, they are becoming a great ISP. Connections are good, and Speeds are dancing. Albeit there are some people who are still hurting on the speeds side, but it IS getting BETTER.

Rogers is now a great alternative to DSL. They finally have a good structure going, and we should be doing alright from now on.

And yes the Customer Service people will be pricks if you are a prick to them. Its a common misconseption that because your the customer, you can do anything to them. That they are just there to serve you. There not. So be nice they'll be nice, and you will probably find yourself getting a better deal.

Rogers is a excellent ISP, and my connection with them has been rocksolid with no downtime.

Keep up the good work Rogers... If you don't, Bell might be able to catch up .

By The way. Why would I want a 800k connection that I can't get unless im within 100 ' of the CO?

spam in a CANada

the rat bastards of the socialist totalitarian state of canada heavily subsidise their hi-speed service and americian FAX spammers use this cheap-govt. subsidised service to send unsolicited faxes to the U.S. through VOIP! thereby getting around the federal NO-CALL LIST! so the penny stock scams, and re-fi promos will keep cumming 2-U courtesy of the single payer/americian subsidised/ higher drug cost/F*#kers/ from stalin's wet dream to the north! mmm, bandwidth

Hmmm, I use Primus Canada (formerly Wincom based out of Windsor, ON). I wonder if they're going to up there speeds now. Its nice to see Bell is FINALLY getting on the band wagon and trying to compete.

I worked for an ISP for quite some time and we had a large number of users switch from sympatico over to us for DSL service because we were faster. Also, my cable provider, Cogeco, has 5mbit downstreams, wouldnt it kick ass if Bell upped themselves to that!

billybat

Re: mmm, bandwidth

Bell competing? They've been #1 since the begining.Maybe not fastest but in reliability and customer service and promos they cant be touched. As far as cogeco goes, for the most part they suck. I switched from their internet service because they didnt give a damn that my internet didnt work.Their solution to my problem was "maybe itll start working tommorrow". Their 5mbps is a total scam in my opinion and i guarantee noone will actually see those speeds on a cogeco line.I switched from Cogeco cableTV because of the same careless attitude.
