Bell Mobility customer sues over text fees

As a former mobile telephone salesperson, Éric Cormier knows just how complicated contracts can be.

"I know exactly how it works," Cormier said yesterday after announcing he is launching a class action against Bell Mobility Inc., his mobile service provider of 10 years. Cormier is suing over Bell's plans to charge 15 cents per incoming message to customers who don't pay a monthly fee for text messaging.

According to Cormier's lawyers, the fundamental issue is defending customers' rights when powerful corporations decide to change the rules.

"One way or another," Saint-Pierre said, customers become "hostages" of the companies that are supposed to serve them.
