Charlotte trial to test consumer demand
(old news - 02:55PM Wednesday Mar 03 2004)
tags: wireless · telco
BellSouth has started adding WiFi Hotspots around downtown Charlotte as part of a trial to determine consumer interest. Like Verizon's Wi-Fi offerings in Manhattan, the service will be free to BellSouth DSL customers in the city. According to the Associated Press, a list of available hotspots will be available here at the BellSouth website. The first of these hotspots went live today at the Fuel Pizza Cafe on North Tryon Street, according to BellSouth's venue list. While the service is only available to BellSouth DSL users, you could sign up for $4.95 dial-up service to gain access to the hotspots.

Free WiFi?

But isn't this a tad short sighted? Only offering it to already known subscribers? How is that going benefit the masses that are too far away from the Telco to get DSL?

Re: Free WiFi?

Well it also stated it will be valid to those who sign up for dial up for 4.99. Any one can get that.

Re: Free WiFi?

Eh....You can only get the $4.95 rate for dial-up if you also have complete choice and and the Bellsouth unlimited long distance plan.
Here's the list of rates. »www.bellsouth.com/consumer/Inter···ing.html

I don't think that's the point.

I agree. I think it's stupid for them to limit it to Bell South customers only. Since it's a trial run, at least let other people test it out without having to sign up for DSL or dialup services.

what's funny is...

Bellsouth's TOS won't let me set up a free hot spot on my Bellsouth DSL that I pay for.. huh, go figure.

Re: what's funny is...

Since when has the local dsl company cared about what benefits the consumer.

They don't. In the long run they will profit greatly from the data collected now and later-on our money.

What would really be cool is...

If they'd also install some hotspots in the terminals at the Charlotte Airport!!!

Re: What would really be cool is...

That would be outstanding, but not likely to happen as part of this trial, since it is in partnership with the Charlotte Center City Partners, and the airport is not in the Center City. Maybe later, after the trial is over, if they expand to additional areas.

To make sure they do expand, people should use the hotspots that are in place, as much as possible.

Bah

Bah.

Just drive around downtown sometime. There are PLENTY of wide open access points.

I was doing PC work for a salon and they only had dial-up. Took my laptop with me, picked up a signal from the place next door. Downloaded the patches, burned them to CD-RW, and used them in the sick PC.

Why pay for what you get for free?

pigs will fly before Raleigh-Durham gets free WiFi

Raleigh-Durham is all about paying big for everything, including WiFI. Borders has this silly Tmobile deal, where you buy a day pass of 10 dollars OR you can pay 30/mo for a subscription which is stupid if you have an existing internet account. A few places offer free WiFi, including venues that make you go up to the cashregister and get a code. It's amazing to see such a supposed technologically advanced area as the famous RTP without comprehensive free WiFi, or at least WiFi for existing customers of RR or DSL companies. If the merchants here could get 100/month for wifi, we'd have a million hot spots...that's the Raleigh Durham mentality: can't sell it? Don't do it. Rock on San Francisco!!
