Drops 'Ultra' tier price, offers deals
(old news - 10:02AM Tuesday Sep 28 2004)
tags: prices · telco
Bellsouth has announced they'll be cutting the price of their flagship 1.5Mbps Ultra DSL tier $7, from $50 to $43. The company also launched a number of new incentive programs, including a $15 per month discount for six months for new customers who sign up via the company's website. The move brings BellSouth prices more in line with incumbent offerings in other geographic areas. Yesterday we mentioned that Bellsouth is exploring a 56kbps "boostable" DSL tier.

Is this at the wholesale or retail rate?

I am curious to know if this is a reflection of reduction in the wholesale or retail rates. If its at the wholesale rate that is thus, in turn, being reflected at the Bellsouth.net retail rate then other resellers of Bellsouth wholesale DSL should see this savings, too. Otherwise, its only a savings at BSFA.

Cool.

I'm happy with my service with BellSouth. No.. not happy.. I'm pleased with it. 100% uptime since I had it installed August of 2003. The price, while a tad high ($44/mo. + 2.97 "Regulatory Fee) still was ok with me seeing the excellent service I've been given. Granted I've never really had to spend countless hours on the phone with their tech support (Billing is a different story) and granted I do not qualify for their new Extreme Plan (3.0/384), simply because I'm on IFITL (Fiber).

The price cuts is truly appreciated, especially now that I have an extra phone line and I'm paying about $120/mo. on the phone bill! Yikes!!

Instead of this...

How about getting rid of that BS "cost recovery fee" that they feel so inclined to force upon us all.
Let's see drop the $2.95 cost recovery fee or we drop our "ultra" tier by $7.

dumb BellSouth rep

I called them yesterday about this when reading somewhere (not DSL Reports) that the price dropped. I talked to the dumbest customer service rep (in billings), who first said my service was $50 less $5 bundle discount, then said it was $42 after the $5 discount, then said it was $42 less the $5 discount. She then said the $42 price was only for new customers, but that was my price as well. The net result was I spent 10 minutes on the phone (including 6 with a voice-recognition automated service that did not understand the words "I want to speak to a fucking representitive now you piece of shit machine") and left not having a clue what my price was going to be.

Now I know at least.

Re: dumb BellSouth rep

I said that to the machine, not the rep.

I worked for 18 months in phone customer service, and I know when someone is trying to help me and when he/she is trying to simply get me off the phone without actually doing anything.

Waste...

This was brought up before... instead of wasting time and money on a "boostable" 56k version, they should make the 1.5 meg version the slowest, and unroll a 5 meg version for the highest.

I do not think you have a clue as to the cost of rolling out one program vs. the other.

This isn't Korea! This is the U.S.A. We actually have a big competitive market. My point? What can't you see it? Read it then or perhaps I should type it for you again...

This isn't SBC. This is BellSouth. SBC is welcome to come here and offer us cheaper products but until then we're comparing oranges and apples here.

I was just stating I get lower prices. Why not try another competitor? Again, my point it I can get it cheaper. It's good to see them lower prices for you but it should be much lower. And again I say Daaaaaaaaaannnng, because I get it for such a dirt cheap price.

i know we're paying the premium for ours.
hopefully SBC will drive Comcast/Charter/etc to lower their HSI products 'nationwide.'
this is probably the only way that BS would reduce their prices even lower.

I think you missed his point, but he's already replied with claification of his point. I'm in Atlanta and SBC is no where in Atlanta. So, what is the point of dslwanter commenting about what he is getting if no one in Bellsouth's nine-state reason could never benefit from what he is getting. Its not the southeast so its not applicable.

Besides, when someone is operating at 2-3 times the number of revenue sources its easier sometimes to operate at a lower margin. While I am surprised SBC is offering a $26.95 and wish anyone capable of getting it all the best, until its an offer in the southeast where I live its as pointless as what the Koreans are getting.

Bullshit!

What competitive market?

There are NO competitors for my broadband dollar. Not one! I'd see a 2X speed improvement if Verizon would let my 56K modem run at full speed.

First off your 56k is not allowed to fun at full speed due to regulations. Where broadband is available my friend, there is a competitive market, what the hell do you call all the 3rd party vendors? My my company was bell south I would definitely look at those 3rd party vendors.

And where broadband is not available, there are no 3rd party vendors. And no 2nd party vendors. Just plain no vendors.

In rural NH "competition" is not delivering broadband to anybody. A boatload of money can get you a T1 line, but I don't know of anyone in town who actually goes that route.

Characterizing the market

We have wandered away from the point.

I dispute the claim that we have "big" competitive market.

What we have is a very patchy market. Depending upon circumstances, you can have a very competitive market, a very restricted market, or no market at all.

In Greenville, competition is who can recycle the most and hug the highest number of trees

:D:D

I miss NH. Here in Stamping Ground, competition is who can grow the coolest mullet or drive the loudest pickup truck. Wierd though, in a town of 700 or so, rural Kentucky, I can choose from 2 wireless providers, cable, and DSL.

1.5Mbit

It's pretty sad when a company can offer 1.5Mbps as their "ultra" tier. At over $40 no less. But price drops are always good, too bad the cable industry raises prices instead, namely Time Warner.

There is another 3.0/384 tier that is called extreme that is $5.00 more. Kudos to BellSouth on lowering rates regardless of the pissers & moaners.

too many of the more metropolian (is that a word?) areas seem to forget about the country and the small towns.

I'm *Finally* on 1.5mbit and there's no chance of them raising that up to 2 or 3.0 any time soon.

You guys take your 3mbit/512 packages forgranted

Since you asked, no, it is not a word. Try 'metropolitan'.

Any price cut is welcome

I've been with BellSouth DSL for almost 2 years now, and this cut is nice, but I wish it were just a bit more. Also, the top service here in NW La. is 1.5/256. I guess I'll have to wait until Haley's Comet shows up again before they increase our speed to 3Mbps Extreme...

DSL Extreme is available in your area. You're most likely just to far away from your CO/RT DSLAM to qualify...

Re: Any price cut is welcome

Your only solution is to sell your house (and pay 6% comission in the process to a realtor), and move closer to a CO (and spend another $5k on moving, new appliances, etc.).

Come on, you know it's worth it for another 1.5 Mbps downstream...

Any cut in price is good and I been with for more than a year and a half. I am pretty satisfied with their service though I think they should up the speed bandwith and have a tier system instead of a 3 tiered

Hate to say it, but I saw this coming

I read this article in the CJ about a month ago that made me think that they would drop prices.

So if the press leans on the ISPs then they lower their prices. Interesting....it would seem that there are huge corporations at play here. Question: will Insight or any other ISPs be the target of any more articles?
