Gossip from the halls of the CLEC...
(old news - 10:06AM Friday Oct 05 2007)
tags: dsl · competition · business
A Covad insider this week tells us there's a rumor circulating the halls at the CLEC that Best Buy is considering a purchase of the company. "I do know that this has been an ongoing interest and that at one time Best Buy walked away from negotiating and then came back with a new offer -- so far it looks good and is going foward," says the source.

Best Buy recently acquired DSL provider Speakeasy for $97 million, something we discussed not long ago in a conversation with Speakeasy CEO Bruce Chatterley. While the acquisition seemed strange to users, Best Buy runs the unit under their Best Buy for Business unit, allowing the companies to offer bundles of voice, data and managed services. Speakeasy had already started targeting the small business market out of survival necessity.

We contacted Covad for public comment on the possible acquisition and were told that "as a matter of course, we don't respond to rumors." Obviously, this should be filed under gossip for the moment, but if we hear more, we'll keep you posted.

Update: We've since had several insiders tell us that Best Buy is primarily (and perhaps solely) interested in acquiring Covad's VoIP operations. There's also other players in the game, including AT&T and Sprint.

Re: Best Buy..

I just hope they don't seen the "Geek Squad" after me...

I saw a commercial the other day for a TV show that had an avoid copyright infringement version of Geek Squad and it was called "Nerd Herd".

Nearly fell out of my seat...

Well, you know that the Geek Squad techs can fix anything. Even those things that haven't been invented yet. At least that is what they imply in their commercials.

heh
they even fix stuff that's not (yet) broken

so now DSL has gone the way of the big-box-store, commodisized, retailed-out, complete with the inattention to customers true needs. addin those useless geeks and all we get is a recipe for disaster.

Yeah well I called Geek Squad the other day, and they had no trouble fixing my flux capacitor, and my home use cold fusion unit no sweat.

All they did was defrag the influx power conversion chamber, and install a new Heisenberg compensator.

Pretty standard stuff...

Re: Best Buy..

Best buy is very expensive for the consumer. Individual pc components alone are 40% higher than newegg or tiger. I can't see their deal with Convad any better for the consumer. And if you have to hire geek squad, you have other issues!

Tiger is about 20% more than newegg. And you should pay a higher price to have the stuff in stock at a store. Will I go there in a pinch yes but most things I get come from newegg zipzoomfly and mwave.

ouch...that'd suck.

You forgot the ultimately climax though; and that's Comcast buying Qwest, and AT&T, in turn, buying Comast! We'll all be a huge big, pro-Patriot Act/warrantless wiretapping family......

That's "Chuck". Trust me, you'd really rather be part of the Nerd Herd than the Geek Squad.

Geek Squad: Irate customers ranging from the ignorant to the stupid, long hours, low pay, sadistic boss, unwashed coworkers, no prospect for advancement.

Nerd Herd: Irate customers ranging from the ignorant to the stupid, long hours, low pay, sadistic boss, unwashed coworkers, no prospect for advancement. Also various agencies foreign and domestic trying to kill and/or torture you.

BUT -- on the Nerd Herd you get to fly a helicopter and one of the agents NOT trying to kill you (usually) is »us.imdb.com/name/nm2088803/

::sigh:: ...there was once a day where the Geek Squad had a good name.. that was when the original owners in Minneapolis owned it, ran it right and didn't f*ck it up and turn the name into a joke like Best Buy has..

Best Buy won't get them....

if EarthLink jumps in there and get them. Rumor has it that the Link is looking at Covad as well.

hmmmm...

My DSL is Mindspring/Earthlink, Covad install (1400/350 most of the time)), yes it is expensive $50 a month (I can afford it) , but has been rock solid since 2000 with only 2 interruptions in that time. Now what do I have to look forward to.

Re: hmmmm...

Well, I've had Speakeasy since Feb '05, OneLink service with static IP, and it's been rock solid. I've called a couple or three times recently and still great service like before the BestBuy acquisition. Whenever I've called about an issue I've gotten knowledgeable techs who really seem to like what they do, and care about us on the receiving end. I don't feel like anything has changed since BestBuy bought Spk. As it happens, Covad does the hardware end of things for Speakeasy in my area (west Houston). The only "bump in the road" I've had was during a move last year my new service wasn't working, and after they sent a tech to test everything on my end it turned out the DSLAM card in Covad's cage in the CO had to be reset. Rock solid service since then. No complaints from me, and I don't mind paying more to get the stability, plus being able to run whatever I want from home with no TOS or "capping" issues.
Rock on Speakeasy!

Re: hmmmm...

I have been with SE since about 2002 and never had a problem other than 9/11 when my pop was in NY. Down for 2 weeks and never more than a hiccup that a reboot of the modem did not cure. I can count on one hand how many times my lines has been down for longer than 10 minutes.

I have not seen any change since BB bought them. I don't see how BB will somehow make Covad profitable without some sizable price increases and that is a good way to finish off the company (Covad).
