Better Broadband for Maryland's Eastern Shore
Lawmakers agree on $10 mil plan, send bill to Gov. Ehrlich
(old news - 05:00PM Saturday Apr 08 2006)
tags: legislation
Maryland state lawmakers have agreed on a plan to spend millions on better Internet connections (WJZ/AP) on the Eastern Shore, sending the measure to Gov. Robert Ehrlich. Lawmakers from the Eastern Shore have long been pushing for the state to invest in spreading broadband, or high-speed Internet connections, to rural parts of that area. The final bill sets aside $10 million over three years to spread broadband lines across the Eastern Shore, this in addition to the $2 million from the federal government approved this year.

10 Million over 3 years?

The way these people spend money that should wire about 2 streets.

Much of it could be spent on TV commercials by the state claiming how advanced technology is in Maryland. Of course, all just before an election.

But seriously, this bill just created a Broadband Board and Fund that is UNFUNDED in the budget. They plan on taking money from the Transportation department to pay for it. Good Luck. See this for the info on the financial comments on the bill. »mlis.state.md.us/2006rs/fnotes/b···1156.pdf

And here is the bill's info: »mlis.state.md.us/2006rs/billfile/hb1156.htm

I don't thinks Ehrlich will sign it . . . his wife will veto it.

That was my first thought as well. It'll be interesting to see how it's spent.

Eastern shore of Maryland shares a peninsula with lower Delaware on the Eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay. The Western Shore is opposite the Peninsula on the other side of the Chesapeake.

Yep. They are separated by the Chesapeake Bay. It's the yellow part.

Or, as former Governor William Donald Schaefer would call it, a shithouse.

I was too young to remember how good/bad of a governor he was (while I lived in MD the first time)... I do remember how nice of a place Baltimore was to visit when he was mayor there though... now if I go to the Inner Harbor I am more likely to be accosted by bums and panhandlers than to enjoy myself anymore.

But as for the Eastern Shore... I'd love to live there if it wasn't so far form where I work.

Take it from someone on the Eastern Shore that DOES remember him . . .
Maryland is better off without him. He was a jerk.

I knew his time as mayor and he was decent in that he hated red tape and always wanted to get things done. He even made a promise that if the National Aquarium didn't open on time, he would swim in the outdoor seal tank. True to his word, he was decked out in an old time bathing suit with a Donald Duck inflatable toy and went in.

As a governor, he wasn't too good.

Re: This is one Eastern Shoreman . . .

You and me both brother.

It's not that Comcast has been that bad of a ride, it's that we have no real choice.

Have not read the proposed plan yet but if all the money is going to Verizon... I wonder if any thing will change.

After all Fios would be great but if they lock everything down what good is a fat pipe?

What about WiMax? It seems like the Eastern Shore is a prime location for a large scale rollout.

--- The potential customer base is huge.

--- The potential customer base is spread out ideal for WiMax.

--- The Eastern Shore is growing like a deer tick on a blood hound in the middle of July.

--- Flat. No hills. Lots of open space.

Really what are they waiting on.

Pwned by...?

Yes, I confess I'm too lazy to read the article. So who would own the pipes? Verizon or the state of Maryland?

OK, But

Where the hell is all the money going into the USF? Isn't that supposed to be funding this kind of thing? They must have billions in the fund by now (you would think).

Let me guess, it's just like the social security trust fund. no funds, just IOU's.

Finally another choice

Hopefully this provides some competition for Comcast...they are free to do any rate inflations here and those who want the fastest speed have to pay them.

Maybe this would also help with development and bringing more technology into the area, as it is now this area is mostly agriculture.

Re: Finally another choice

Depends on where you go,.. Around here Kent Island, Grasonville thru Centreville up to Chestertown, farms have been selling off in alarming rates, and communities have been springing up left and right. So many commuters from the western shore moving in that most of us that were born and raised here can't afford to live here anymore. If fios were to move in here, I would pretty much expect it to have two branches, one from Kent Island thru Queenstown, and the other from Salisbury out to ocean city. Since the only part of the eastern shore that the state seems to care about is ocean city, and its revenue. If ocean city were to become a toxic swamp, The state would probably kick us out . The way technology comes around here, the rest of the country will have had it in abundance for a while, and they will be moving to deploy the next great thing, before we ever get it here.
