Blackberry is Looking for a Buyer
by Karl Bode 09:25AM Monday Aug 12 2013
Blackberry issued a statement this morning stating that the company is looking to pursue a number of "strategic alternatives," that could include going private or a possible sale. The announcement comes after several years of tumultuous performance by the company, including the underwhelming sales performance of the Z10, the make-or-break smartphone on which much of the company's fortunes were riding.

"During the past year, management and the Board have been focused on launching the BlackBerry 10 platform and BES 10, establishing a strong financial position, and evaluating the best approach to delivering long-term value for customers and shareholders," the company stated. "Given the importance and strength of our technology, and the evolving industry and competitive landscape, we believe that now is the right time to explore strategic alternatives."

F**k 'Em

Way to leave me hanging on my PlayBook you arseholes, I've held on to that for 10 months longer than I needed while eagerly awaiting BB10 for PB as you kept promising...way to play action fake BBRY, no BB10 for PB after all.

Re: F**k 'Em

Come on.... you knew this was coming.

The issue was not the BB10 or whatever product BB released (as their new phone is/was/will be good)... it's that they could not get past the media stating they were dead. No inovation for years and years killed their name. Even with new, good products they could not make it.

Re: F**k 'Em

I totally agree. They were one of the best players at that time, but lost sight of themselves and did not think forward. They rested on their laurels because they were the best smartphone OS. Since iOS (iPhone) was introduced, then the Android OS, they've been catch up. But alas, they are quite late in getting up to speed. WebOS is one example of how to kill a great smartphone OS.

BB's sudden use of spam...

Over the past two weeks or so, I've been getting lots of junk mail from BB pushing their products. It kind of felt like a last ditch effort to try to get some sales up. This news helps tie in that sentiment.

After all this time of hearing how they are going to take back the market with their new products, sounds like reality is finally setting in within the company's walls.

RIP BB, you are really the ones who created this whole smart phone market almost 15 years ago.

Nokia Should Open Their Eyes

Nokia should consider buying out RIM, not only does that include a large source of patents, but also developed software and hardware and an easier way to enter the North American market and gain a larger foothold.
It would be interesting to see if Nokia would indeed purchase them or really who would purchase them.

Re: Nokia Should Open Their Eyes

Nokia has completely turned it around with the windows phone strategy... they are selling 85% of winphone handsets and doubled marketshare 2 years running in the EU and Asia... they got about a 8% EU share which is a major statement in comparison to where they were 3 years ago....

windows phone is the poster child for the missed opportunity BB had: fully integrate with biz services / exchange... go fully cloud.... pioneer a new interface.... back in the game....

BB is gonna end up selling off assets and dead in 2 years while Apple will have a serious fight going on at 2nd place in smartphone OSes

BB wins the darwins

Technology

It starts in the lab, not the board room. Need strong technical minds and a willingness for management to listen to the technical leadership. Its not about getting costs to bare bones levels, its about having a product worth owning.

How can you flounder for this long? It just shows that boards are not very useful.

I owned 1 blackberry and I thought it was OK. I never used their email since it required a BB server. Their web browser sucked but that was no big deal. Mostly I think their text messaging rocked. and I liked the apps. But integration with outlook and more specifically, storing all my phone data was a real pain. Google has it down to a science.

But of course BB actually considered security and Google is pretty much doing the opposite.

You know,

The Playbook is a nice bit of kit. I was disappointed when Mr. Heins stated that they wouldn't be pursuing further explorations in the tablet arena due to the devices imminent demise in about five years. We, oh thirty or forty million of us beg to differ. It may well be a glorified browser, but that's what we want! My wife never took to utilizing our computer all that much except for the creation of the odd document, but now, with the Playbook, she's emailing, and banking, whizzing around the web so fast that her hair flies back! QNX with the gestures and sweeping just feels so natural with a tablet that when we went to look at an Android device it felt, well, crude in comparison. It was faster, and I dare say we'll get used to the operating system, but in our hearts we know that Blackberry missed something vital in selling short the tablet formfactor.

Let's hope whomever picks up the company has a broader vision.

Blackberry needs apps and services

Blackberry needs to stop kidding themselves and just make their services available on a Android device.

Think Samsung with Touchwiz. Blackberry could just put a skin over vanilla Android.

Re: Blackberry needs apps and services

What service does BB offer that isn't already provided on other platforms? Surely it isn't the tired old "secure e-mail" argument.

Just go out of business

BlackBerry is all but dead. One of my friends that I've known since middle school said BlackBerry is an IT administrator's nightmare to troubleshoot. When he worked for a small firm, he converted the company's mobile fleet to iOS.

iPhone and Android are much more popular right now. I've tried BlackBerry and Android and the last three phones I've carried were iPhones (iPhone 3GS on AT&T, iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 on Verizon).

The only reason RIM is still in business is those lucrative government contracts. Hopefully it won't be long before Uncle Sam goes over to Samsung and Apple for their mobile devices.

Re: Just go out of business

Me, my mother, and my grandmother were in the car today on the way to the park and we were passing by a restaurant that was closed that was a great restaurant when my mother was a kid.

That brought on the conversation of everything has its heyday. Some things are here to stay and some things come and go. Look at Justin Bieber, a few years ago he could sell out a 10,000 seat arena. Now the next big act is One Direction. Same with phones and gadgets, what could generate long lines at the Holyoke Mall on launch day will now sell for $3.38 at the local Goodwill.

Some acts stand the test of time like the Bee Gees who kept selling records well into the 1990's. And Green Day keeps producing records to this day.

Some acts I wish who would fall out of favor is Rhianna, who I change the station when she comes on the radio but that is just personal preference.

Correction

Blackberry has been looking for a buyer for some time. You don't do a press release announcing it when there's a chance someone might be interested. In a few weeks they will announce that the company is being shut down and parts (like the patent portfolio and server licensing revenue) will be sold off piecemeal.

It started in 2005...

This was the absolute beginning of their decline, when their CEO Mike Lazaridis made two statements, and I quote:

"Why would anyone ever need to read their e-mail in color? That's just silly!"

"There will never be a camera on a RIM device! It's pointless."

Congratulations on flushing your company down the drain that day.

BBOS10

Has anyone here tried the z10? They actually had something unique going on there. I feel their marketing strategy had too much opportunity. They had to really sell this new product, which they attempted to!!! but with alicia keys? lol

If they had people in BB/T-mobile's etc selling their product and showing it, they probably would've been ok right now.
