Getting the New York City Subway system has been a slow and stumbling affair. A company by the name of Transit Wireless
was tasked back in 2007 with bringing Wi-Fi to all 277 subway stations, but so far only a few dozen stations have been currently enabled. The company recently announced that they partnered with Boingo wireless to help manage the hotspots and today Boingo announced that alongside Google Offers, they'll be
offering free Wi-Fi in the city all summer.
According to the announcement, availability of the offer will be somewhat limited, with connectivty offered at the following locations:
• A, C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
• L station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
• C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street
• 1, 2, 3 station at Seventh Avenue and West 14th Street
• F, M station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street
• L station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street
Google Offers is expected to be the first of many offers providing promotional connectivity. Transit Wireless has also been working with Sprint and Verizon to allow those users to make uninterrupted calls over Wi-Fi -- and plans to offer free connectivity to numerous partner product users including Sprint, Verizon, Skype and Microsoft. Transit Wireless says they should have Wi-Fi enabled at 36 subway stations in the city by the end of the year, so there's pretty clearly a lot of work left to be done.
