Boston Airport Wi-Fi To Be Free Liked surge they saw from free Google promotion... According to the Boston Globe, the Massachusetts Port Authority has voted to approve offering free Wi-Fi to visitors at Logan International Airport. The network, which is operated by both Massport and Advanced Wireless Group, was built more than six years ago and paid usage of the network has recouped that initial investment. You might recall the folks at Logan ran into some trouble when the FCC stopped them from banning any airport Wi-Fi other than their own. After a Google promotion last November that offered free Wi-Fi to visitors of 47 different airports, Logan saw Wi-Fi use surge six fold -- and apparently liked it. Logan wasn't alone; Seattle-Tacoma (Seatac) also decided to offer free Wi-Fi after the Google promotion.

| I like the trend, though some airport free WiFi is crappy In AUS I used Google's system to get free 'net access. Worked quite well, with speeds around 3 Mbps. MUCH better than previously, when what is now a Boingo hotspot was a T-Mobile hotspot with a single T1 running in. Was DEFINITELY not worth paying for, though the situation has been remedied now.
In SAT they've had free WiFi for awhile. For a month o two they used Time Warner Cable (20 Mbps fiber I think) but then switched back to AT&T (also 20 Mbps fiber, albeit with about 5 Mbps downloads and 20 Mbps uploads) shortly thereafter. Nicest airport WiFi I've come in contact with.
In DEN they've had free WiFi for a few years now, and it sucks. There has got to be a single T1 feeding the whole place, and I thought the system didn't work until I pulled out my Windows 7 laptop instead of my OS 10.6 unit. Apparently the login system doesn't work on 10.6, which is unacceptable because I'm pretty sure Mac users are a little more likely to whip our their computer while waiting for a flight an PC users.
I wonder, of the airports out there that still charge for WiFi, how many accept a Boingo pass. They're cheap ($9.95 per month) and net you WiFi via all the major WiFi networks. *shrugs*
Wonder where the nearest Verizon WiFi location is around here. Parents' DSL = free VZ WiFi since they have the 3M package (1.5 provisioned). | |
