Bright House Latest To Deploy Powerboost
On heels of Comcast, Cox, Time Warner Cable and Shaw...
by Karl Bode 06:33PM Tuesday Nov 11 2008
Bright House Networks is the latest cable operator to license Comcast's Powerboost technology, which delivers an extra kick of bandwidth for the first few minutes seconds of a download (or upload). According to the Bright House press release, Road Runner Turbo customers with a current speed of up to 15 Mbps will see bursts up to 22 Mbps, while customers with 20 Mbps service will now see temporary PowerBoost speeds up to 30 Mbps. It looks like they've yet to offer upstream Powerboost, something offered by several other cable operators who've deployed the technology.

Minutes?

Seconds maybe, but minutes?

Actually, here lately for me, it seems like it really is going for 1+ minutes, I know it's sounds crazy, but I could just be crazy as well

Re: Minutes?

10-12 seconds here at best - right at 40MB usually, sometimes more...

works for 5+ minutes for me.

I'm on RR biz 20/2, today I was downloading a fairly large file from work and it was steady at 28Mbps for the duration (5 minutes or so). Really wish they would give us an upload boost too, 5Mbps like comcast is doing would be nice.

Re: works for 5+ minutes for me.

Might be stress testing.
When Comcast first lit it up here, it gained the name of *PermaBoost* - 3500+KB/sec for hundreds of MB.

It was cool as hell!

Now it is backed off to normal PowerBoost that lasts for 40MB, then drops back.

Yawn, been seeing this since around June/July on a standard account. BS to me, maybe implemented to get the FlashCrap pages to load quicker... only benefit I can see of it.

Not in the CFL region?

I have the Brighthouse 15/2 business at my house. After reading this thread I did a speed test (using the Brighthouse server), unplugged my home router & cable router and did another speed test. My results? 14.5M down, 1.9M up both times...

I'll give it a couple days, and if I don't have it I'll call BrightBiz tech support.

It's been out for over a week

I noticed it about a week ago. I was getting 30/2 when I first noticed it. Speedtest today gave 21/2. So it seems it has gone to normal.

Just a con job

I lvoe how people on powerboost post speedtest results like that actually get those speeds 24/7. In fact whose to say if you're on say 16 mbps you're not getting 8 Mbps most of the time? Since the speedtest results will always be inflated. I hope Charter never stoops to using this crap. If I'm paying for 10 Mbps I like to know I'm actually get 10 Mbps and not 5 Mbps.

PowerBoost does have it's use - kills off the first 40MB of a download pretty quick - I like it!

As for sustained, I'm on the 16/2 Blast from Comcast... this is what I get - sustained.

Does ok.

And we have a winner!

"PowerBoost" ensures speed tests are well and consistently inflated. It should help web apps and browser plugin downloading too though.

For proper 'downloading' I don't think its very useful.

Re: Just a con job

Powerboost is volume based, not time based. The boost window is designed around 99%+ of user downloads. Since 99%+ of all downloads are inside the PowerBoost window it provides a noticeable speed increase for the vast majority of users' experience.

There is also no reason why the boost window won't increase over time. I think there is a long history of speed increases which prove this.

The reality is, you cannot please all of the people, all of the time. But 99%+ is pretty good

Stupid

I think powerboost is absolutely stupid. Either give it to me full time or don't do it at all. Not gaining all that much from some stupid little burst, but I bet they have found a way to gain a little more capital from this. If not yet, they will!!

It's amazing, for once they give you a little extra for nothing and people still find a reason to bitch about it.

Having worked in other countries, you'll find this is primarily an American phenomenon. American consumers are the absolute worst and for some reason feel entitled to everything at the lowest possible cost.

PowerBoost

If you're downloading a 1 GB file at night (like 1 AM), PowerBoost might stay on the whole time because there's excess capacity.
