Broadband Crosses Maryland Bay
Fiber network speeds up Lower Shore
by KathrynV Sunday 08-Jul-2007 tags: Fiber
People living or vacationing on Maryland’s Lower Shore have frequently had trouble accessing high speed internet but plans are underway to change that. “More than four miles of fiber-optic cables are being fastened underneath traffic lanes on both spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The high-wire installation, expected to be completed in two weeks, is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the state's telecommunications infrastructure -- starting with the Eastern Shore.” The entire state should have a fiber optic broadband network in place by 2010.

Fiber optic in NYC

They could put fiber optic into the train tunnels in NYC, and really get fiber to NYC faster.

Do you mean FTTH?

Because fiber is already running thru railroad train tunnels now. Subway tunnels, who knows??

But fiber is already running up and down all the streets of Manhattan already. All the major businesses already have fiber connections.

The LIRR/MTA also has fiber down just about every single inch of in use tracks too. The guys who we contract to do fiber runs in our building(s) are the same company who does their installs.

Funny thing...

I was on my way across the Bay Bridge Friday on my way back from vacation in the Outerbanks and saw the barge, but thought it was for repairs. Who would have known they were running fiber across the Bay???

Cool stuff.

This isn't last mile

This initiative is not for last mile access. Local ISPs will still have to provide access to the customer.

Why not just lay a cable?

I would have thought it simpler to just lay a cable under the Bay.

backups

Hopefully the cables won't back up and stall for hours like summertime traffic on the Bay Bridge.

Re: backups

LOL - maybe we can reduce the vehicle traffic load by promoting e-vacationing via real-time webcams installed on the beaches.
