Broadband iPhone: Q1 '08
Meanwhile, Europeans get stuck with EDGE, too
(old news - 12:07PM Tuesday Sep 18 2007)

A major gripe with the first generation iPhone is that it doesn't support broadband connectivity (excluding Wi-Fi), instead leaving users stuck with AT&T's clunky EDGE network -- which pumps out 200kbps on a good day if the planets are aligned properly. The Street indicates that this could all change early in 2008:
A faster third-generation, or 3G, iPhone will be available sometime in the first quarter, say people familiar with the production plans. The new iPhone should help quiet critics who were unimpressed by the 2.5G EDGE technology the first version used.
The next iPhone incarnation will also integrate GPS functionality. Obviously, the new phone will ride on AT&T's HSDPA wireless broadband network, which, while capable of 3.6Mbps, more frequently nets users speeds around 1Mbps/384kbps. Of course, the European iPhone pre-launch hooplah is today, and despite expectations, it looks like they'll be stuck using EDGE (via European operator O2) as well:
Click for full size
O2 has fired up its network with the slower Edge technology (as against Europe’s love affair with HSDPA) to accommodate the iPhone. There is no 3G iPhone as yet because, as Jobs said at the launch, the "The trade off with 3G [in battery life] is too bad right now."
The iPhone goes on sale in Europe on November 9 for £269 ($537, €387).

D'oh!

First early iPhone adopters get news that their phone dropped a whopping $200 in price within months of purchase. With this news their iPhones have now become both outdated and overpriced. Ouch!

I am glad to hear they're coming out with a 3g model though. That will be a killer combination.

I disagree. They were dumbasses to wait in line to buy that overpriced thing before any of the things that have happened since then. This only amplifies the dumbassedness.

The jealousy I see here is unreal.

EVERY piece of technology is continually losing its value. For that matter, that includes cars, trucks, boats, etc....

My values are none of your business. You might want to spend your money on a depreciating asset like a boat, or a new laptop, or a CD of your favorite artist.... there's no difference. It's an entertainment expense, and at $399, it's cheaper than MOST hobbies.

How is Apple's pricing/feature/release schedule any different than any other piece of hot technology of recent times?

That computer you're using right now that you bought 3 months ago. Outdated & overpriced. Congratulations, you just proved my point.

Yea, I still remember when a moto razr was like $500 with a contract, and how buggy as hell it was.

Nowadays you can get a very bug-fixed one free with a contract, or an unlocked one from motorola for about $210 with an accompanying bluetooth headset.

It was, in my opinion, a poor choice from Apple to not include 3G from the beginning. Why invest in old technology? We knew the entire world has ALREADY migrated to 3G, and most of the U.S. as well by the time it was released. I'm more concerned with UMTS here, not necessarily 3.75 and 4G services like HSDPA.

It was about as stupid as putting a G4 in a Mac Mini, and the people that bought them? Well, they're self explanatory.

I may consider one when they offer 3G. 400$ is ridiculous when you factor in it includes a contract, but I do think Apple is going somewhere with their concept.

How is Apple going to improve battery life for 3G ?

Jobs:
There is no 3G iPhone as yet because, as Jobs said at the launch, the "The trade off with 3G [in battery life] is too bad right now."
And between now and 1Q 2008, what is going to change regarding battery capacity? No new battery tech is available. Will the 3G radio chips change enough between now and then to reduce power draw? Or will Apple make a bigger, thicker iPhone to handle a bigger battery for 3G use?

Re: How is Apple going to improve battery life for 3G ?

I have a Samsung blackjack with the "extended" battery.

I know some people turn off 3G to enhance their battery life, but on my phone, 3G seems to make very little difference. With light usage it lasts around 3 days between charges, in Edge or 3G mode (and yes 3G is enabled here).

I saw it for the first time on 6/22/07.

And I didn't take it in the "being an ass" context. If you're from Sunland as your profile states, you're not exactly in a high tech metropolis either, lol. I think 3G went active here the same time it did there. That weekend I drove to my Mom's in Tujunga and I had 3G for the first time there as well.

Lol! What S/T needs is a Target, Walmart or something to replace K-mart. (NO to home depot, rah rah)

Speeds are usually in the 760-800kbps-ish range when I connect my Blackjack to my laptop. It works very well where there's good signal. When you start to get into the hills of Tujunga, Cingular's coverage becomes pretty craptacular.

There is supposed to be a new chip, which is much better then it is now. The chip will use less energy so its better battery life. 3g should have included some of gsm's battery saving aspects.

This comment in general makes me wonder about the performance of other 3G phones as they start to roll out. 2G phones have finally gotten decent battery life and now we are going to go back to the AMPS days under 3G?

That timeline doesnt make sense.....

Who would buy a "euro" iPhone in early November knowing that within as little as two months the 3G version would be available?? Dont get me wrong, I am sure people will line up to buy this but the timing is terrible. Most 1st generation products are released at least 12 months (if not 18+ months) before their successor comes out so that the company can make enough profit. Releasing a newer, better, faster version a short time afterwards is terrible planning on behalf of the providers. If nothing else, they should simply have waited the few weeks (with no release) and then dropped a 3G iPhone on everyone. THAT would have created some serious demand, and no cannibalization of their own product line either.....

Its bad enough that stateside, Apple released the iphone then dropped by the price by $200 on the 8 gig model within 2 months but now they are going to release a 3G phone a few months after that?

I accept all responsibility but I'm never going to be an earlier adopter of apple products again. And considering this was my first major apple purchase, I don't think I will be as excited to buy anything else from them in the future.

Re: That timeline doesnt make sense.....

I think most Apple fans expected Apple to simply make the cell phone market like the iPod/Macintosh markets... i.e. no big price decreases.

Apple missed a chance to change the cell phone market for the better (from a vendor perspective, anyway).

Being on the bleeding edge means you get cut

That's the thing... Having to be first, to be "Cool" to be on the "Bleeding Edge" of technology means that you get cut.

Quickly, features, stability, pricing improves for the people who waited patiently. The early adopters are like the Guinea Pigs and Beta Testers, and they end up having to "re-upgrade" or pay more.

Yeah, can you believe it! Apple has the nerve to release an update to their product after it has been on the market for a mere seven months. On top of it all, the new version addresses the biggest complaint consumers had regarding the old model!

Sarcasm? Your arguement might have some merit if Apple actually agreed to replace the soon-to-be obsolete units with the new one, at least at a huge discount. The poor fools who got locked into a 2 yr deal just might agree with me.

Re: WOW! And the fanboi's talk **** about M$?!?!

Very sarcastic.

When you buy a piece of technology, you have to accept that it will become better and cheaper down the road. I don't care how much you paid for it or how quickly the price drops - that's the nature of technology.

NO company - not Apple, Microsoft or anyone else - should feel obligated to refund customers for purchasing a now-obsolete product or a product that just received a price drop.

If a person was willing to pay $499 for a EDGE iPhone and was happy with that purchase at the time, I see no reason for that to change with the release of a new model or a price drop.

As always, buyer beware!

NOTE
And I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with someone buying a new, bleeding-edge product. They just have to realize the risks involve, and STFU with the whining when something better comes out.

All IMHO, of course.

At this point

I yawn with each new Apple release and flip the page. I'll spend the dough on the new OS 6 to 12 months after release, but that's it for awhile. Apple Elites® will continue, as always, to ante up revenue for every shiny, skinny toy Jobs can put on a glass display table or giant overhead; I'm not so sure on the 'early adopter butt-monkeys' next time around ...

BlueTooth 2.0 on Touch is the answer

Apple should have put bluetooth 2.0 on the Touch. Then you could connect it to any BT2.0 phone on EVDO or HSDPA and have broadband.

Does Apple have absolutely no foresight anymore?

In the meantime, I'll stick with a 3G PDA. My Treo can play and STREAM most any audio/video codec, has BT, EVDO, real keyboard, SD card, replaceable battery and oh yeah, runs thousands of cool apss and games. Apple is just too limiting.

Re: BlueTooth 2.0 on Touch is the answer

Bluetooth is commonly used for telephony accessories. With that one feature, iPod Touch would be an iPhone without a camera or a cell phone (ignoring the software differences). The less product differentiation there is between feature sets, the more likely it could be claimed to be a competing product. Especially if Apple opens the platform up for development. Then it would be simple for a third party to provide VoIP software using a Bluetooth speaker/microphone. And that's exactly what I want. A Wifi VoIP phone that's as nice as a iPhone, but doesn't have a monthly service fee. And that's exactly what AT+T wouldn't want: a potential competitor.
