Houston FTTH networks picked up for a cool $250k

After gobbling up Utah's iProvo municipal broadband operations for $40 million last March, Broadweave, a small fiber to the home operator, looks to be picking up the remnants of the Eagle broadband network in Houston. Eagle broadband filed for bankruptcy last fall, but are most noteable for their 2005 suit against 25 anonymous individuals for posting fake press releases and critical statements on the Yahoo finance message boards, which Eagle claimed led to a 76% drop in stock value. That suit wound up much like their broadband business.

Gasp! An FTTH provider failed?

Color me shocked and awestruck. A FTTH provider failed? Gee, I don't understand- according to BBR wisdom, all one needs to do is roll out FTTH and the customers will be beating down your door for the massive demand of higher speeds. Does not compute.

Well you need to offer better speeds than cable/DSL currently offer. some of the smaller ones not even offering cable speeds[there was one a week or so ago offering 3000/128 for $80/mo.

Except they offered 10M/10M and (rather overpriced) 20M/20M packages with VoIP and TV over a year ago.

Yep that's right. They assummed city-backed debt, but paid nothing for an entire city built out with fiber optics passing every home and business. I want to get in that line.
The city paid nearly $20 million from annual budgets and financed $40 million to build the network. Then allowed Broadweave to assume the debt. Can you say "Good ole boy network"? It was never publically advertised as being for sale.

They bought nothing

That purchase price didn't include transport rights, a NOC, franchise agreements or even any networking equipment. All they got was buried fiber to 4,000 homes and a host of ill will from the previous provider. They've got their hands full with mismanaging iProvo, so don't expect them to do anything with this "asset" that requires millions to be operational.
