Buckeye Launches 30 Mbps, Testing IPTV
500 user IPTV trial in July...
Ohio's Buckeye Cable, known only to many of you as the cable company that once set the FBI on cable modem uncappers -- has upgraded their top broadband speed to 30 Mbps downstream according to the company website (also check out our user reviews for Buckeye Cable). The company also has issued an announcement that they're the first U.S. MSO to begin testing a new IPTV platform by Bigband Networks. Bigband's vIP PASS service allows carriers to bypass the CMTS by delivering DOCSIS IP video streams through edge QAMs (OK?). According to Light Reading, Buckeye will launch a six-month trial in July they expect will include about 500 users.

nifty

Cool that such a system has been proven to work in Korea...
The vIP PASS solution is currently deployed in Korea with LG Powercom, Korea's largest HFC network serving over 2.3 million subscribers, delivering IPTV services to PCs and IP set-top boxes.
Sounds similar to a uverse type of system, except that instead of trying to squeeze video through phone lines, they've got coax to work with. Should be interesting.

Upload?

Still only 1Mb upload? What's the point with all that download and no upload?

Re: Upload?

With torrents being throttled who needs more upload.

Re: Upload?

never had a problem uploading when i was there..P2P or even torrents.

But why worry about that when they're watching usage patterns anyway...

Edit--- still faster than ATT's U-Verse

Just doesn't make any sence to have anything over 15Mb download without atleast 2Mb upload. I had 15/1 and it was alright, but then I tried out 25/2 and the extra 1Mb upload makes a huge difference, and seems a little more realistic. Nothing wrong with 1Mb for some customers, but I personally do a fair amount of uploading, so the extra 1Mb makes a huge difference.

That's what I'm saying. Would rather have my current 12/2 than 30/1 tbh. Also, you can't get above 12/1 if you just want internet alone.

Buckeye Cable can deliver VoIP. They're also a CLEC in Ohio and Michigan so they fully manage their network from start to finish without having to depend on Sprint for the DIDs like TWC and the others.

IPTV

Just in time for the FCC's "Allvid" gateway.

Nice try, buckeye but you're not going to lock your customers into using your crappy settops.

Re: IPTV

crappy set top boxes? LMAO! you must not have seen them? they have custom built boxes from MOT. and actually let the customers use their own and or buy them direct from Buckeye so no monthly fees are charged. They also have the largest hard drives in their DVRs.
