User hottboiinnc See Profile drops me a line this afternoon to note that Buckeye Cable in Ohio has started offering a new 12Mbps/1Mbps tier for $70 a month if you bundle. Apparently the upgrades hit user modems in late April, but the new speed wasn't official until May 1. You might recall I wrote about them back in 2002 for their efforts to prosecute modem uncappers. The 12Mbps speed is likely a competitive response to AT&T's U-Verse VDSL service, launched in Ohio last June.

Actually $79.99 a month

without the ten buck bundle discount. Anyone know what the minimum bundle cost is to get that discount? Bet it's more...

I tend to agree... I'd almost settle for the 2Mbps with the prices offered.

the minimum serviced needed is basic cable for about $10 so roughly it comes out to the $79 still. Unless of course you bundle more than that. they have VIP package thats Internet, Phone and Cable for $99 per month for 1 year. Includes DVR and Digital.

For $80 dollars a month for 12Mbps. I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.

WOW

Wow, what an amazing rip-off. I'm paying $64.99CAD for a 16/1 connection and I thought even that was a little high.. guess not.

buckeye sucks

They suck anyway

dsl is your best choice in the area.

dish network + att > buckeye cable anyday.

their are some fanboys and employees who would disagree of course.

Re: buckeye sucks

I just moved to the area and love the service. AT&T can keep their Dish and DSL anyday of the week. I'm on the 8Mbps plan and top out at normally over 10Mbps and always hit 900Kbps upload. Try that with AT&T- anytime. DSL maybe great in your area but not all of them. Especially for people who have no use for AT&T or their over priced landline services.

I'm Not Sure Why This is Notable

I buy 12 Mbps from Grande for $60 per month. They don't seem to have any bandwidth issues, though, because I did a speedtest last night and had 19Mbps. In fact it never seems to go below 16Mbps.

Re: I'm Not Sure Why This is Notable

Why not? It shows a small cable company can actually compete against the AT$T. You don't see AT&T out rolling anything like this? Hell they cap their "next generation" DSL at 6Mbps before overhead. WOOOOO thats noteable everytime they turn on one more neighborhood.

U-Verse

We have Vards around town but their not active and only in certain areas. AT&T has no plans on turning them on anytime soon. But Buckeye offered 10/800 well before the Vards came.

Get ready for more...

This is nothing; Buckeye has much more than 12 Mbps up its sleeve.

I don't know what the official stance is regarding our DOCSIS 3.0 deployments, so I'm not going to elaborate beyond saying that some employees already have connections at home which make the 12 Mbps tier look paltry in comparison...

Bring it, AT&T.

At $79 a month anything faster than 12Mbps would put a lot of Toledo folks in the poor house.

Re: Get ready for more...

Who says they're not going to lower pricing? The people that get raped over HSI and phone are the DSL & Landline people $60+ for your landline bundle after taxes and "fees" then your price of DSL which AT$T decides to raise monthly it seems like.

I ran some field trial wideband modem speed tests this morning to the Sprint Chicago point. All came in over 40M down and close to 2 up as you can see on the speed test page. I have been getting 60M+ on the bex.net speed test.

Interestingly, the best performance came from the Safari browser running on a Vista machine.
