YayOne of two items I actually applaud Bush for, yippee skippy. I'm not sure that keeping internet access tax-free will help increase broadband penetration like he says, but it can't hurt it, and it's a tax cut that non-multi-millionaires can actually benefit from EDIT: It's been five minutes and no one else has posted? Am I the only user who has to be at work today?

Re: YayNope. I'm about to go to work too.... This law is good news though - with rate hikes by everyone and mysterious additional fees being tacked on by DSL providers the internet is getting to be expensive enough as is..

Probably so since it's Saturday. Bush signing the four year ban is a good step in the right direction and applaud for him as well in taking this action. Now it needs to be taken to the next step and be permanent.

If there is one thing about taxes and government, nothing is permanent. If its not in the Bill of Rights, or carries a Constitutional Amendment, the government will tax it.
By "renewing" the tax ban, they are saying "we reserve the right to tax it later"

All constitutional admendments can be changed dude, all it takes is another constutional admendment to supercede the orginal admendment. Think about the Prohibition Era Even the Bill of Rights are not immune because they are also admendments to the constitution, no more and no less. What I said was my opnion, or an idea as well. Just becuase I said it does not mean it will come to be. Politians are deaf and dumb to ideas and opnions of the citizens they represent becuase they can only hear what the money is talking. Now please excuse me. I feel like listening to a certain AC/DC song right about now.

I'm not a millionaire and I benefitted from the tax cuts, just because I have two kids.

Re: Yaysaid by Boogeyman:I'm a single white male and was 22 at the time of the tax cuts and I saw a nice fat return from it. Almost the same boat and I saw no return at all. I was a little older though. No taxation for 4 years will allow it to grow. Then they tax it then and make a killing. Sort of like those $20 a month offers from comcast. After month 6 you get hammered.

The New George?Good job for BUSH!
I hate George Bush for his unjust war in Iraq and other things..... But this is a good thing he has put into effect. I applaud him and hope this is a sign of change in his administration, though I don't believe this will be true....

My wife and I fall wayy short of millionaire status, say $950,000 short, and we received a considerable tax break last year. What a nonsensical line of thinking only the "rich" benefit from the tax cuts last year.
And on topic: Excellent news on the tax freeze

Re: The New George? A family of four can buy a lot of big macs with the extra $1,000 at least they got. $800 more in Child Tax credit, the increased excemption, and the huge increase in standard deduction (FINALLY making the married SD twice the single), the addition of a 10% bracket, then later expanding on that bracket.
Families of 4 making 40K saw a 100% tax cut. I saw a drastic cut in the percentage I paid as well. The percentage was in the 20's IIRC.

Looks like Ohio is going to fight itFederal legislation known as the Internet Tax Freedom Act, effective October 21, 1998 imposed a three-year moratorium on State and local taxes on Internet access and on-line services. Specifically excluded from the moratorium are taxes that were in effect prior to the effective date of the Federal statute and generally enforced. Ohio's inclusion of electronic information services in the definition of a sale was enacted in 1993, and the same services would have been considered automatic data processing under the law that existed prior to that date. The application of sales and use taxes to these services has been generally enforced. Therefore, Ohio's tax on Internet access and on-line services is not subject to the Federal moratorium
Ohios tax was passed ST 1999-04 - ON-LINE SERVICES AND INTERNET ACCESS - January, 1999 Thats one year after the new federal law.

How Sad ...... so this is the full extent of all he's going to do to fulfill his campaign promise of universal broadband by 2007?
How is this going to result in broadband being deployed to the tens of millions who don't now have it?
In reality, the guy probably doesn't even know what broadband is. The objective of the campaign promise was in all likelihood just to get this tax ban passed, to make telco and cable company contributors and lobbyists happy.
Us folks wanting BB will continue to be screwed.

GWB : Hey Laura you gotta see this lady on the internets. You type in the window and she does it. Look honey I told her to put up a GWB sign and she did. Wonder if she knows where Osama is hiding. BTW why does every one rack on him for the "internets" comment technically there is 2 "internets" available. Just not to all of us.

Copy of the Bill stating extension to 2007Does anybody know where I can get the latest copy of the Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act? I found a few sites, but they only have the 2003 version which doesn't include P. Bush's extension to 2007.
The reason I ask is because I called up Earthlink to get a refund for the months that they still charged me tax for and they said they wanted a copy of the Bill as proof mailed to them.
Thanks in advance. | |
