Verizon strikes deal with retail giant
(old news - 10:51AM Thursday Jun 22 2006)
tags: dsl · business
Verizon today announced they've struck a deal with Walmart to begin selling DSL at 549 of the retail giant's stores across 24 states. Users will be guided by "specially trained Wal-Mart Connection center associates," who'll run the super-sophisticated procedure of pre-qualifying your address via the Verizon database.

what a waste

Walmart should be getting into the WISP business, not the DSL business.

now I have to listen to ANOTHER pissed off redneck in the store because the rep just told him they can't get DSL to his outhouse.

Bad decision to team up with Verizon. Verizon will cut off service if you actually use them according to the lousy Verizon TOS!
Walmart is going to have a ton of angry customers after Verizon cancel the customers service!

I'm not sure what you are talking about here... the story is about DSL not EVDO. They are very lax on their TOS for residential internet. They don't care how much you download or upload... you could do it 24/7 for all they care.

Well, they might be better off then the typical front line CSR that has no clue (or at least the last to know) about the service offerings.

I just read recently that in many of their stores they will also custom build PC's for you too. It seems like WalMart is taking over the world of retail.

You can already by Road Runner (cable internet) at stores...

RR has been sold by stores like Wal-Mart for some time now. It only makes sense that DSL will also be sold. With all these super cheap promotions going on, I bet that they will land a lot of customers too!

Get your Broadband now, pay later

Does that mean I can buy Verizon Broadband on layaway? And if I don't like the service, I have 90 days to return any hardware and they will refund my money ?

From the WalMart site »www.walmartfacts.com/wal-mart-wages.aspx

"Walmart wages are competitive with others in the retail industry.

At Wal Mart, the majority of our hourly associate positions are full-time.

The national average for regular hourly Walmart wages is nearly twice the federal minimum wage, and higher in urban areas.

In addition to competitive Walmart wages, the total compensation package includes much more. Associates are eligible for performance based bonuses and Wal-Mart also contributes to the employee profit sharing/401(k) plan. They also receive merchandise discounts, company-paid life insurance, and vacation pay.

Add opportunity for advancement to competitive Walmart wages, too. Seventy-six percent of our store management team started in hourly positions."

Don't forget, the $5.15/hour minimum wage is a starting wage for someone with no experience or skills. Most companies pay people according to a persons experience and length of service.

Also, I don't remember it being an employer's requirement to guarantee anyone enough hours to qualify for overtime pay.

no kidding. thats nice that a lot of people are willing to work overtime. But if the workload doesn't demand it, then why do people feel entitled they should have it?

Overtime is for when something has come along that cannot posibly be met within the normal 40 hour work week. things like natural disasters that require the utilities to work overtime.

A pallet of good is not going to rot if its not stocked THIS WEEK. So get over it. Overtime is for emergencies, and I don't see too many emergencies happening at Wal-mart.

For the same reason they think that entry level employers should bear the burden of bringing people, who are such poor employee's that the only job they can get is at somewhere like Walmart at minimum wage, up to the same standard of living as someone who actually shows up for work reliably.

Face it, if you can't find a better long term, primary job than the lowest levels of the Walmart employment chain and you're over 20 you either aren't looking hard enough or you suck at work.

I've been there, I worked nightstock at a grocery store (UFCW, minimum wage no insurance for 2 years) for 6 months while I took my time looking for a better job.

I'll do ya one better.

I got laid off from my first job out of college in '97 about 3 months in, the job market was tight back then, and had to take whatever I could get.

I ended up working as a lot attendant at the local Chevy dealership. Six years in college, and I was parking cars and scrubbing oily lube bays in the evening. It sucked, but at least I was working and not sucking down an unemployment check.

I only worked there a short time (3 months or so), but I think it was a good experience to go from a suit and tie office job to grinding kitty litter into oily spots and sweeping the shavings off the brake lathe machine.

Still wish I could use the lifts, though. Made working on your own car easy

In bigger cites or where there is competions up here in minnesota, they pay jsut above minimum wage, and as soon as they knocked out their 2 competors by underpricing, they jacked there prices. not to mention there meet tastes like soilent green probobly get it all they way from arkansas. I also love the employees comment the other day i overheard "they can afford to give away millions to charites, but if we ask for a raise we are fired."

You have no clue to what you are talking about. Wal-Mart pays most 7-10 an hour with health care. Like most people they take the 2% and make it seem like 80% of a company is that way. Why doesn't anyone go after Kmart and Sears or Target for paying Min Wage? Why does every think they are entitled to $12-16 an hour? If you want a good paying job go to school and earn it . Making good money is a privilege and not a right. They people making Min wage are High School kids. Who here didn't start at Min Wage?

Then you probably don't want to work at any other retailer either. Not even those UFCW ones that make you wait just as long as Walmart to get insurance and hide the cost of the plan under "union dues"...which you pay for from day one.

Not that this has anything to do with retail employees being able to look up your phone number on VZ's website.

Retail is retail. Walmart is not any different from any other companies.

The point is that retail jobs suck overall. You get paid crap to sell thousands of dollars worth of computer stuff, whereas Walmart employees get paid crap to sell groceries.

DSL at Walmart

I do not get the purpose of Verizon selling DSL at a local store. Unlike cable, one still has to wait 21 days before Verizon get around to provisioning the phone line for DSL. I do not see selling DSL locally working out for Walmart.

BUT.... it is a great advertising gimmick that will likely benefit in new sales not only to Verizon, but to Wal-Mart...
as customers may go ahead and buy their first computer right there, while in the store, after seeing the Verizon booth.

They already offer Comcast.

This will be good especially for the super Walmart in New Castle, PA where they already have a deal with Comcast. Now the customers over there have a more options when they sign up through Walmart. I think this is good especially for those less educated about broadband and it may seem more appealing to them if "even Walmart is getting into it."

Wish I had a franchise.

A lot of money to be made off the stupid. They struck a gold mine here. All the news stories I hear about Wal Mart customers sound like they are all on the verge of bankruptcy looking to save a nickle on a pack of hot dogs or socks. I didn't know these people could afford internet access let alone a computer.

walmart a good deal for verizon

I agree, it would be good for people not very educated about broadband in general. Too many people still think AOL dialup is a bargain deal. At walmart it would be seen by those and the other dialup users, that think any kind of broadband is too expensive and/or thinks it ties up a phone line. Maybe ATT will do the same.

Verizon Marketing 101

At this time and for the next few year's , Verizon's main product is the Fios service ! Verizon , this maybe an actual good partnership if you could really deliver this service as intended. But did you take the actual time to see where most of the general Walmart's are located and there shoppers ? RURAL AMERICA - You don't have the budget to now re-invest in RT (Remote Terminal) xDSL service. Also , your Rural Broadband Iniative has been the deployment of Pre-Wimax / WiMax service , so really what's your Rural Broadband Plan ? If this deal was to get your foot in the door to marketing with Walmart , make that known , because your going to have a lot of disappointed potential customers , that will goto cable or local WISP. I give it a month after initial roll-out you will see a clear Fios advertisement ...hmmmm - get my suttle sarcasm ... If your intentions are to help the Rural Broadband Deployment , keep all your options open , because DSL alone won't service the general customer of this deal. On a side bar ... BellSouth / Ummm I mean AT&T , you should have made a move like this , you had the advantage of xDSL with the vast amount of RT's in place ...

Just because someone spent 4 years in college doing the beer Bong bit while basket weaving doesn't qualify them for $60K when they graduate unless they are recruted by the CIA or NSA.

They did away with "Trade Schools" because it was looked down upon, but someone who spends 4 years specializing in a trade has a better chance of higher pay right out of the gate.
Walmart should get into the WISP business because they have stores in most cities and towns.
