CBS to Make Content Exclusively for Streaming Companies
by Karl Bode 08:01AM Tuesday Aug 12 2014 Tipped by newview See Profile
CBS CEO Les Moonves announced on an earnings call last week that the network has started working on television series that will air exclusively on streaming video services. "...Shortly, you're going to hear us being in business with some of the [streaming video services] with original program[s]," stated the CEO, who added that the company "will be producing more and more shows for more and more outlets, including major streaming companies and other emerging distributors." Moonves did not specifically name any streaming companies.

Only a few choices

Netflix, Amazon Prime, & Hulu Plus. Are there any others that people subscribe to?

Of course, they could set up their own CBS streaming service.

This is the first step

It appears CBS is going to make the first move in moving original content to streaming only services.

If this is successful, it won't take long for other stations to fall in-line.

You know what? I think I am ok with this. I need to give up TV and get out doors a lot more.

Elephant in the Room

I wonder how CBS intends to handle the issue of advertisements. If Hulu is the target service, it's not an issue I suppose. But, if it's Netflix or Amazon? In the latter case, one side or the other will have to set a possibly dangerous precedent.

Re: Elephant in the Room

I don't think CBS getting paid directly by the streaming providers rather than whoring themselves out to Madison Avenue is particularly dangerous at all.

More product placing and don't count out the commercials being within the programming stream directly. Considering that most Netflix apps I have used have absolutely horrible fast-forward and rewind functions I can see this as being a PITA.

Exclusive

The content is exclusive to streaming, but will a customer have to verify they have have a participating TV provider subscription to access it? I know it seems ridiculous, but you can't expect sane choices if history is an indicator.

Nothing to see here

This is just CBS keeping their production arm busy. No different than Netflix ordering a show from NBCUniversal.
