COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS CITY PURCHASE ADELPHIA FRANCHISE
by usk546 Sunday 03-Oct-2004
RICHMOND - City officials are considering a brave new world: the cable TV business.

This week, a committee that has been studying the issue for about a year recommended that Richmond cancel its franchise agreement with Adelphia Communications Corp. and attempt to buy its local operation. The company has filed for federal bankruptcy protection.

Same here

Here in Carroll Maryland they are considering the same. Comcast will probably be the likely provider if not since they provide for every county that borders us except for Frederick.

Is Adult Programming a casualty of this?

one of Richmonds arguments was that Adelphia made Adult programming available.

Would the city of Richmond deny an A La Carte request for the Spice channel if they owned the Cable franchise?

if so, would the city government then TRACK WHO WATCHES WHAT? AND WHEN? When your government is the keeper of the records, including what you like to watch in the privacy of your own home, who will see to it that your privacy is not invaded or abused?

Would you want your local government to know that you have some rather kinky tastes in television programming?

Would you want your local government to dictate what's allowed and what is not allowed?

This really does raise some serious civil liberty questions.

Agreed. It has been my experience that the only thing that any government does well is...ummm...well...you know what I mean.
