Cable Industry: We Now Offer 200,000 Hotspots
by Karl Bode 08:19AM Friday Oct 04 2013
The cable industry this week announced that their creatively named joint "CableWiFi" initiative now offers access to more than 200,000 hotspots if you're a paying customer of Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Bright House Networks, or Cox Communications. That number is up from the 150,000 hotspots offered back in June, and the 50,000 hotspots offered back in May of 2012. The CableWiFi initiative piggybacked initially on the back of Cablevision's idea to deploy free Wi-Fi to paying customers across NYC commuter regions to better compete with Verizon FiOS.

Not bad

I use to have Jabcast and the public wifi is the only thing I really miss. RVA is covered with them while Verizon is no show for hotspots.

Not All Cable Co's

I note that Cro-Magnon Communications (AKA Charter) is conspicuously absent.

Hmmm, seams like MediaCom is absent too.

Re: Not All Cable Co's

they don't offer public hotspots because in all their markets, someone else has already done it.

and...who cares? no one

the few places they actually have it..its locked down tight for speed so why bother other than to offer unloading services to cell providers...it aint for our benefit.

Re: and...who cares? no one

I guess it depends on who is providing the wifi. the access points on cablevisions network are 15/5

Not so! I see better than 10 Mbps down all over the city (New York City).

For one thing it doesn't impact your data plan. For another, like in my case, I can use my WiFi-Only iPad around town as if it had a data plan.

TWC doesn't have a ton of WiFi in Austin, but the places they do have it the service is at least usable. Sometimes even comparable to 4G on a slow day. And in some cases they have WiFi where cell reception practically doesn't exist. For example, the office building I'm sitting in right now.

Can't speak for WI, but the TWC/CableWiFi Hotspots here in LA serve up 15/1, a 10-fold improvement over the status-quo "free" hotspots found at McDonalds, Starbucks, etc.

While your current experience may not be as bountiful, the nationwide trend is definitely looking up.

TWC in Charlotte has similar speeds.

"locked down tight for speed"?!?! Not everywhere... I get 8M/2M from Comcast's pole mounted boxes.

Just don't try to call Comcast to tell them that one of them is broken. Most Comcast tech support folks won;t admit they exist.

Use It All The Time

Being in Cablevision territory, I have been using it extensively for years. Sprint 3G service around me is not even worth turning on the "cellular data" option. However, Cablevision has rolled out so many of these hotspots since 2008 it is almost impossible to not find one. I even found one next to a nature preserve on a small back road. My barber has one in his store and my church got one installed as well because we rent space to the public so there are plenty of customers for it.

CableWiFi

CableWiFi also supports other customers as well. Those customers must be part of Net Near U though and must be able to roam outbound to that network. NNU is a major backend provider for CableWifi and was even a partner back when TWC was doing this in many areas of Texas under the RR brand.
