Cable, TelcoTV Operators Eye Tablet Video
Verizon, Cablevision, Comcast all have projects underway
by Karl Bode Friday 13-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives · cable · content · consumers
We've already noted that Verizon is working with Motorola on an Android-based tablet that will be integrated with FiOSTV content and services. Time Warner Cable this week also indicated the company was working on a video streaming application for the iPad, something Comcast and Cablevision are also investigating. This is of course part of a broader satellite, telcoTV and cable industry effort to extend their TV Anywhere paywalled functionality to tablet computers, and of course the effort's success will be dictated by ease of use -- and navigating broadcaster licensing restrictions. You'll of course note that while most of these companies are focusing on iOS, Verizon's hitched their wagon to Android.

Can do it with software available now

There are various generic software products out there now that works to bring TV to your mobile device. I use Playon TV on a desktop computer that can send TV shows and movies to my iPad both at home on local network and on the go thru a remote capability.

Of course, don't go crazy if you want to stay under whatever caps your broadband &/OR mobile provider uses.

Of course, you can also go directly to some of these providers and watch the video on the iPad or iPhone. But one thing that PlayOn TV does is convert the Adobe Flash videos that some sites use exclusively to an HTML5 version compatible with iPhones & iPads.

I have been using a SlingBox for about 3 years.

I have been using a SlingBox for about 3 years. I have been able to stream live TV, OnDemand programming, and the content of my DVR for years.

focus on an app and the hardware

most android 2.1/2.2 devices will be able to stream & have access to video over wifi... so the app becomes more important than the device.

Re: focus on an app and the hardware
