And a good chunk of those are baby bell customers...
(old news - 01:01PM Thursday Mar 06 2008)
tags: competition · business · stats · VoIP
Last we checked, cable controlled roughly 70% of the VoIP market, a number we're sure has risen since the stellar fourth quarter VoIP additions most cable providers reported. AT&T, Verizon, Qwest and Embarq are collectively losing roughly 2.6 million landline customers per quarter, and about half of those users are converting over to cable VoIP. All told, cable operators now report more than 13 million phone customers. While the price of cable VoIP is steep compared to indie VoIP, customers say they're more satisfied with phone service from their cable provider than from their phone company.

too bad too, they're tried and true! I love my POTS, I'm just wondering how bad it will be when I'm forced into the scenerio where I have to buy it. Wi9ll the tax structure be the same (you know it will eventually), will I be charged additional fees for upgrades I never see?
Basically, all of the nickel and diming my cable HSI is doing to me!

Re: Baby Bells

I love pots service too. It's dependable and seldom off line. The problem is the bells priced themselves out of the market. Why would I pay twice as much for half the features or pay more when I can bundle for the same price? Bell just needs to come back down to earth with the rest of us.

I like Cox digital telephone--- just one problem....

... it's too expensive. When the "Introductory" price wears off, I'll probably switch back to POTS simply because it will be $10 cheaper or so.

Considering they are selling basically a VOIP product to you over the existing Cable equipment which you're already paying for Internet and TV via, I would think they should be able to better compete on price.

... of course, it's not about competition. It's about profits.

Not seeing the big picture.

This is great for cable companies in the short run but not in the long run. Every year more and more people ditch wireline phone service and go wireless only. Eventually a good portion of those subs that cable has scooped up will leave to go wireless only and go right back to AT&T,Verizon,Sprint unless cable gets off their ASS and starts offering a competitive wireless voice product pronto.

And everyday we scare people into getting CDV because 911 will know where you are when you call and might not if you call from a cellphone.

Re: Not seeing the big picture.

Even my POS $19.99 cell can show where it is for Emergency Services(think 911).

See the cross hairs on the right of this image?
That's telling you and me that Positioning is connected.
This phone's location can be seen.

This is an El Cheapo cell phone... WTF phone or service do you have that they cannot locate?

CDV(Comcast Digital Voice)

From a standpoint of being on it's own channel/freq... it beats standalone VoIP services.

No cutting into my pr0n... er uh, Research Videos.

As opposed to landline - Fuck SBC/AT&T.
SBC, way back when, is the reason we went with digital.
Dropped calls, static, dial one number - get another, getting charged for long distance for a call that went 4-5 miles, having the operator say I was in Hayward or Menlo Park... fuck all that!

AT&T Digital Phone(~16 years ago) then it changed to Comcast Digital Phone(AT&T buy out), and now CDV.

Telcos can KMA!

Re: CDV(Comcast Digital Voice)

I'm happy with Cox Digital Voice compared to Bellsouth. The call quality is all digital so calls are perfect in the time I've had them. Indie VOIP Cos require YOUR HSI connection to work. I don't see why people pay Vonage rates when they can get Cable Digital Voice saving about $20 a month vs. the Telco and NOT using your HSI connection as well as betting on the Net to make calls. And, Cable Cos set-up your phone service so it doesn't require a degree from MIT to set-up (like Vonage, VT, etc.).

I did a good ~200 Vonage setups when I was with the Geek Squad a few months ago; Should I call MIT for my degree to make sure it is in the mail?

$$$

All the telcos have to do is lobby to have all of those govt. taxes, fees, and surcharges removed. If I weren't required to pay almost half my bill to the govt., then I wouldn't mind so much returning to Verizon.

(Oh, and $5 for a dial tone? $6.50 for CallerID? Yeah, riiight.)

Re: $$$

Exactly...
POTS = multiple plans with tons of useless fees/taxes/surcharges/unfees for a dialtone
You _can_ get a $40/unlimited package, but in traditional telco fashion, you have to jump through hoops to get it (i.e. online order only, requires certain restrictions...etc.
My $40 + $5 Canada line costs almost $60/month

If VoIP $40 = $40 + no B.S. fees, I'd considering switching tomorrow.

True, but reality is, even if the government did remove all the fees, the telcos would STILL charge the same amount.

How can they say people are happy with cable VOIP when most people in my area have slow downs with there cable broadband?
Dont you need a decent amount of bandwith to get good clarity?

This has nothing to do with that. Most cable providers route their VoIP traffic over their own private network before it goes to the PSTN.

First, you're making the false assumption that all cable networks are maintained like yours. Many people have excellent, consistent speeds with cable.

Second, digital phone uses its own bandwidth outside that used by internet. That's one of the big advantages of using cable MSO provided VOIP vs. indie VOIP like Vonage.

List of fees:

»youtube.com/watch?v=VDvXaUH6NNo

I am a lucky Verizon FIOS customer... let met just list some of the fees still charged to POTS over Fiber:

Fcc Line Charge $6.40
Federal USF $ .65
Surchages $ .19
911 Surcharge $ .35
Federal Tax $ .19
State/Local
*in this case NY$ .96

In additon:

Usf- Long Distance $1.23
Surcharges (more) $1.46
Federal tax (more) $ .18
State/Local (more) $4.16
-------------------------
grand total: $15.77 (based on an unlimited calling plan with one additional option over basic: 3 way calling).

Charge for VOIP: $29.95-$40 without nickels and dimes all over the place. Then again.. it's not a GUARANTEED QOS, it's VOIP we're comparing it to... Bundled with internet under a 1 year contract it goes down to about $42 each. Still more on the bottom line than the cable competitor.. but it's two different products... FIOS Internet/(POTS)Phone vs Cablemodem & Cable VOIP.

Cell will destroy both Pots and VOIP eventually. I would guess the large portion of consumers that have either one of these services are probably 40+ or live in montana
