New England provider throws down
(old news - 09:27AM Tuesday Aug 17 2004)
tags: dsl · bandwidth · cable
Great Works Internet has gone so far as to hire the "Tolly Research Group" to compare their DSL service to Time Warner Cable Roadrunner service (with Time Warner's cooperation). Claiming that the "New Age of DSL Has Begun", the company claims their survey "refutes a number of erroneous assumptions many people have about DSL service, most importantly proving our speed is comparable or better than that of cable modem". While the company does offer DSL speeds in excess of 8Mbps, they only offer limited coverage in New England.

8mbps??

When will other DSL service providers see that this is something that people want?

Btw, anyone know what the upload speeds are?

Ah, I'm too lazy to look it up I guess, thanks.

God what I would give for 1mbps up. Thats almost my downspeed right now.

Re: 8mbps??

Yeah, I put in my phone # to see if I qualified, because that is awfully tempting, but instead of telling me, the next screen said something like "Thank you, a salesman will contact you soon." Pity I gave them a neighbor's phone # since I have phone via Comcast cable right now and I didn't think it would show up in their system.

GWI only does DSL in NH and ME for now. Says you're in Cambridge, MA. Not sure if that's still correct

Re: 8mbps...

You would be supprised at how many people qualify for those speeds. I know a few people that qualified for it but don't have the need or desire to go that fast. For what they use it for, 3/768 for $29.95 is enough, which is still incredible compared to verizon and cable

I'm 8500 ft away, and getting speeds of 8/1 (which I find is hardly next door). It may be only easy in my case because of the loop, but it's good Even with horrible internal wiring too hehe.

Gee Verizon, at least 1 mb pleeease

Sounds nice, I hate the fact that I have to pay Verizon full price for 1/2 speed due to distance. There must be something that could be done. Don't the phone companies have anything like a repeater to keep the signal going?

As a matter of fact I had EarthLink before I moved and they gave me the same distance crap, when I knew the co was just around the corner.

I have Direct TV so I will not be calling Comcast. DirecTV’s Direct way does not seem like a very good choice either.

I am just complaining I guess, I really would like more speed. heck, I use to pay EL almost $55 a month for 728/128 at least my Verizon (DSL) is just $29.99. With the phone DSL service I ordered from them I am saving over $50 a month and have WAY better phone services. Including, unlimited long distance calls, mail box, call intercept with number blocking and priority numbers. + more....

In case anyone is interested Verison Freedom/DSL is what I use: »www22.verizon.com/foryourhome/sa···ctor.asp

Re: Gee Verizon, at least 1 mb pleeease

Uh, read up on the technology. They can't install repeaters because they degrade the signal too much. The only way to get faster speeds to more people is for them to install remote DSLAMs in the field, which is expensive, etc.

Very Interesting

I send them an email asking of future plans for service in MA.

I wonder if they will reply or if they even care:D

I would love the 5/1 service.

Re: Very Interesting

only one flaw, the 2nd and 3rd tier have the same upload speed...which is not very enticing.
It's only 3mbps faster download speed, useless IMHO..

Well for the price they have it @, its a lot more enticing than my cable connection right now:D

Also, I received a reply from them....seel below.....

Thank you for your interest in GWI-Broadband. Though we are always expanding our network, service in Massachusetts may be a bit of a wait. We spent the first 9 years serving only Maine, only recently the beginning of 2004) starting up in New Hampshire. If you would like, we can place you on a contact list for when we do, eventually, cover your area.

Again, thank you for your intestest in GWI-Broadband. We appreciate

your support.

Sincerely,

Jared Card

Where else are you seeing 1mbps up for those prices! (except maybe OOL) and how is 1mbps not enough for a res account. What are you looking for 2mbps+...?

What part of NE are they in?

Bah. I'm in NH, but sadly I am not in their area. Guess I'll have to stick to Adelphia.

Does anyone in NH qualify?

I'm happy with them

I've had GWI for about 3 months now and the speed is great. I signed up for their top tier and when I was having trouble getting over 5 megs they came down within a day to hook up a splitter.

I'm pretty sure all accounts come with 100 hours of remote dialup which came in handy this summer.

Re: I'm happy with them

BS charges more then 49.95 for a crap 3mb/384k connection, this ISP must be the best in USA! 29.95 for 3mb/768k is very enticing!!! btw, this is too good for anyone

dsl - blah

So when will dsl overcome the need for the co to be located 2 inches from your house to get good speeds? It might also be a good idea to be able to provide service to more than .00005% of an area too. That's when cable providers might be concerned.

Re: dsl - blah

With the new DSLAMs they have, you can be up to 2.5 miles away from the co and still get 3/768 service. This is new stuff from Lucent. People are accustomed to what cable providers tell them: DSL is crap and cable is far superior. That was the case in the past. GWI is the future. Dedicated connections starting off around 3mbps/768kbps for $29.95/month. That's $10/megabit. The 2nd tier, 5mbps/1mbps for $39.95 is $8/megabit. And 8mbps/1mbps is $49.95 is only $49.95, making it only $6.25/megabit. How many cable providers can do that? Yes, dsl has it's limitations, but for those who can get it, you can't go wrong. Also, once extended reach DSL becomes available (too expensive to be worth it right now), the coverage area will be able to better compete with cable.

OMG anyone else hear a broken record?

Yes DSL is limted by distance to CO. This is not being disputed and is a fact. Can we get some more material here or should I buy a CD Player and throw away the vinyl?

Fibre!

Sorry to burst ur bubble who wanted fibre, but fibre is only a cable that processes info. faster than utp and stp and wireless. Fibre isnt its own service, its just a way to recieve info back and forth faster. it goes good with dsl. And i cant wait for VDSL(virtual dsl) gonna be sooo nice.
