CableLabs Certifies First DOCSIS 3.0 Modems
Five vendors get green light for new modems...
by Karl Bode Friday 09-May-2008 tags: business · bandwidth · cable
CableLabs today announced that they've officially certified the first round of DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modems. DOCSIS 3.0 theoretically allows cable operators to provide downstream data rates of 160 Mbps and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps. Now that the gear's getting closer to being fully cooked, you've just got to wait on cable operators, many of whom are taking the wait and see approach to network upgrades.

A few weeks ago, Comcast launched their first pre-certification DOCSIS 3.0 market, offering $150, 50Mbps/5Mbps service in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. A few users in our forums have had their installs completed, and state that the company is using Scientific Atlanta (Cisco) DPC2505 modems for the service (see pdf product guide). The pre-cert gear is firmware upgradeable to the final spec.

As it stands, Comcast is taking the lead on DOCSIS 3.0, promising 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 service to their entire customer base by 2010. Most other cable operators are currently shuffling their feet with their hands in their pockets, waiting to see if demand is there before upgrading. But for $150 with overage fees, it's hard to think initial demand is will soar, which means real DOCSIS 3.0 speeds are still a few years out for most of you.

IPV6 big part of Docsis 3.0 cable modems

Multiple vendors is good:
CableLabs® has awarded certification status for Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS®) 3.0 cable modems to Ambit, Arris, Cisco, Motorola for two modems; and SMC.
And IPV6 support also means allowing future multiple devices in the house each with its own IP address. The 3.0 cable modems are also backwards compatible with previous standards allowing easier rollout and cutovers to new standards.

DOCSIS 3.0 is backward compatible with all existing DOCSIS products. Another key element of DOCSIS 3.0 is Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). IPv6 also will allow cable operators to effectively manage the proliferation of devices that are capturing consumer interest, including portable media players, cellular phones, gaming consoles, PDAs and others.
The way I see a rollout going is to upgrade all CMTSs to Docsis 3.0 1st; then area by area rollout of 3.0 cable modems to those buying the faster tiers; and then rollout of 3.0 cable modems to the whole user base.

Now you can...

... reach the caps and overages even faster. Isn't that worth it? /sarcasm

When it comes to cableco's Time-Warner is merely an also-ran.
Cablevision is consistently a trailblazer.

A trailblazer? Tell me, does OOL still cap power-users who actually try to use their internet connections down to 128kbps?

Cablevision seems nice, but get off the high horse.

I don't see how catching up to fios in a single market = trailblazer. You're gonna have to try a bit harder than a speed test.

that's my very point. They only have to manage a single market.

Uh no, Cablevision servers very large areas of NY, CT, NJ, and a few systems in PA. It's not a single market.

I really thought they would have bought them up by now... I guess TW isn't as hungry for acquisitions as Comcast is.

Worth it if you can afford it. I don't pull down a lot of big files, but when I do I'd like to get it quickly. The 5MBps upload is the more interesting part.

About the caps...

I still don't think they're going to go through with it. Despite the numbers and economics that show it would only affect a minuscule number of users, there's too much wiggle room for regional/smaller competitors to leverage in some marketing that would convince the masses that Comcast is cheating them out of something, even if they're only using 5GB a month.

Re: About the caps...

How can cable companies like Time Warner expect to see demand for a 50Mbps service when they are considering slapping users with a 40GB or less monthly data cap. What a great way to wiggle out of upgrading, slap users with a cap to scare them silly.

Complaining modems = win.

CableLabs today announced that they've officially certified the first round of DOCSIS 3.0 complaint modems.
modems that complain to their ISPs? Great!

Cool

I personally can't wait for Comcast to roll this out. I hope that it will cause AT&T to offer internet speeds faster than 10/1.5.

That won't effect speeds at all for you. The "old" standard provides speeds a lot higher than most people get now with cable.

DOCIS means nothing for %99 of the people currently. Majority of cable ops don't offer speeds yet that require it.

Means nothing

Since majority of the Cable Co's in certain franchise markets, will still peddle 5-8mbps download and 384-512k upload.

Plus you'll get to hit your bandwidth caps quicker with the new speed tier.

Really? So if you had a faster tier you wouldnt download FASTER... you would download MORE? Or are you just trolling?

Because regardless of my speed tier, I still download the same amount of crap I do now.

How much?

Does anybody know how much do Comcast charge employees for it?

Re: How much?

$54, no modem rent charge.

Still have to have a professional install, though. But that's to ensure all downstream channels lock with proper signals.
