CableOne Customers Lose CNN, Other Turner Networks Carriage fee disputes claimed more victims this week as the roughly 600,000 customers of the Washington-Post owned Cable One lost access to Turner cable networks including CNN, Turner Classic Movies and Headline News. Customers lost access to the channels on Tuesday after negotiations over carriage fees broke down. The breakdown came the same week that Verizon stated they'd struck a new accord with Turner for content. "In an extraordinary act of retaliation and bullying, Turner Networks removed TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network from all Cable ONE systems without warning, when our prior Turner contract expired on October 1," CableOne said in a statement. "This happened despite the fact that Cable ONE had signed new contracts and already agreed to pay an enormous nearly 50% rate increase for these three networks." CableOne proceeds to claim that Turner pulled the plug "in retaliation for us dropping their less popular programming." CableOne says that customers will receive service credits for the lost content. "We are simply asking that Cable One pay the established and accepted rates already in the marketplace for our portfolio and remain willing to discuss a new agreement that recognizes the strength and value of our networks and the popular programming they offer," Turner claimed in a counter statement.

| Trouble Is this the tip of the Iceberg? After losing the Washington Post as their main financial daddy the company is on their own. Cable One is just not that good. I'm betting Cable One is for sale and soon to be sold maybe to Comcast. Cable One just does not have the financial resources to compete! | |
| | | | Re: Trouble actually cableone has been doing upgrades this year on their systems to 1GHz in areas that have been at 550MHz for the longest so they are slowly catching up | |

1 recommendation | Actually the Post was draining money from profitable ventures, like CableOne. You notice that only the Post was sold and everything else was kept.

| | CableOne customers need to stand behind CableOne The carriage disputes are getting out of control. I really hope CableOne holds firm. Let the Free Market decide with an al la Carte business model. | |

Just another example of how content companies blackmail cable companies. Take all our stations, even the worthless ones, or we will give you none. But the customers will whine and complain and hold the cable company responsible. And then be upset when their cable bill goes up.

| Let's see I have netflix, Cruchyroll, hulu, iTunes, Apple TV and all it provides, Amazon Prime, all the stuff on my Smart TV etc, etc, etc, etc ProXPN to the UK, and Australia. TNT what?, Cartoon Channel who, CNN who cares. Content providers had better be careful there is going to come a point when they will with draw channels and no one will notice. -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption | |

The point is I don't watch these shows period. Cartoon channel is still running season 3 of the anime series Nurato and I and presenting watching season 12 on Crunchyroll. TNT phooey between Netflix, and Amazon Prime there is very little to see their. CNN; har-de-har-har I get better news coverage at Onion.
I agree CableOne is doing what Dish Network does and I appreceate it -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption

| | | I appreciate Cable One's stance to keep my costs down, and appreciate that they're crediting all customers for the dropped channels. The credit may not amount to much but it's a good move.
Turner and others should realize that continually demanding large rate increases is not sustainable. I'm glad not to be forced into paying more for Turner's bundles. Much of it was junk anyway.
Hopefully Cable One will add some other programming to refill their basic channel lineup.

| A la Carte.... I completely understand that A La Carte can't work because the same content owners who charge high carriage also demand bundling in order to sell their less popular channels.
I do wonder at what point the cable companies team up together and try to bring in A La Carte. They could change the cable business model drastically. They would charge a basic connection fee (like $20/month) to be connect to their infrastructure (this is where there profit would come from) then A La Carte on top of that. Pay for what you want.
I imagine the cable industry will implode at some point. I've already noticed my cableco continually increasing internet fees, which I think is to slowly make the transition of profit from cable to internet.
The content owners are shooting themselves in the foot. They'll slowly turn everyone into cord cutters (ie price themselves out of the industry). The cable companies all sell internet. They can shift profits from cable to internet and keep on chugging along..... without cable the profits of the content owners fall off a cliff.

| Who is the winner? In this dogfight no one wins. There are two types of programs OTA and paid. OTA is generally religious programing, Infomercial adverting, and home and jewelry shows. These are usually free or very lost cost/
Satellite television gets a signal from the same place as cable and the local TV station. They contract with the operator that owns the content and has the legal right to enter into a sales contract with a buyer. The length of contract and cost can vary from buyer to buyer and region to region. Once a contract is mutually agreed upon the buyer acquires the signal from the seller and retransmits it to the customer.
Back in the early 90s ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS were US national channels. All you needed was an outside antenna.
The others such as CNN, HNN, ESPN, AMC, HBO, sports, Playboy, and mega stations from KTLA, WGN, ATL and NY were behind paywalls and charged from $2-$10/mo. It required a big dish.
Other channels such as CMT and Sci-fi were $0.50-$0.75 per channel. There were 3 or 4 companies, Turner was one, that sold packaged stations like cable does. And a customer could ala carte their entire line up for $30 per month. 7 HBO channels cost $7; Cinemax cost $5. AMC cost $1.00. All ESPN channels cost $2.50.
What is available now on TV viewing is maximum piggyback late nite infomercial fillers, and your carriers choice of the packaged channels.
