CableOne Hikes Prices, Blames Retrans Fees
by Karl Bode 06:28PM Wednesday Feb 05 2014 Tipped by telcodad See Profile
Cable One is in the process of informing customers that they'll soon be paying $5 per month more for most of the company's TV services. The company tells the Sun Herald that broadcaster retransmission fees are to thank for the increases being passed on to consumers. "In the past three years, local broadcast stations and cable networks have increased their rates by an average of 40 percent," notes the company, who predicts similar hikes in 2014. On a barely-positive note, at least CableOne is including the hikes in the cost of service; many companies are now trying to bury retrans increases below the line to misleadingly keep advertised prices the same.

how bout their rate increases

Did they reveal how much they increased their rates to the consumer in that same period?? I'll wager not.....

Semi-props for not making it another 'below the line' charge tho....

Feel the same way. I am so glad I don't watch cable.

Expect a big push for ala carte

If you are telling customers that their rates are going up because of increased fees from particular channels then they are going to push the issue of being able to drop those channels. As this re-trans fee dispute progresses I think we are going to see major pressure for ala carte regulations.

I see channel packs being more of a standard than ala carte.

It's that time of year!

Amazing how at about this time of year, the cable bill always seems to go up!

My Charter bill has already gone up twice in the last 3 months, although not even a total of $5, yet!

I am expecting another increase some time shortly after this "free" upgrade in speed that residential customers are supposed to be getting some time in the near future!

More money

It is partly the customers fault when the cable company drops a channel because of price hike demands from the channel all hell breaks loose. People a still complaining about AT&T dropping Hallmark. TWC took a big hit from the CBS fight. Aereo may be the thing to breakup up the strangle hold the content providers have on cable.
