CableOne Promises $60 Million in Network Upgrades
Perhaps You Can Back Off Your Obnoxious Caps Now?
Washington Post owned cable operator CableONE is promising a new round of $60 million in network upgrades to shore up some of the company's network shortcomings. According to CableONE, the investment will "provide Cable ONE customers with enhanced speed, reliability, and quality in their internet, cable, and phone service." "We’re committed to delivering the best possible experience to our customers," said Cable ONE President and Chief Executive Officer, Tom Might. That commitment includes some of the most aggressive usage caps in this industry, like a 3 GB daily throttle cap on their base 5 Mbps tier, or a 50 Mbps tier with caps as low as 50 GB. The company also is the only carrier we know of that applies punitive lower usage caps for users who refuse to bundle additional services.

I was on their service for a while

And it was terrible. They had rolling daily cap, even on the top speed package. Of course the only other option in the city was DSL that topped out at six meg or so, on a good day, with a great line.

They only exist in markets where the company can assure limited competition, and offer late 90's tech at current market prices.

Once you hit the cap you would be throttled until midnight, then it would be wide open until around 8AM or so. Then the meter would roll back over and you had to slow down or stop downloads until midnight or get throttled.

About time...

Been wondering when C1 would upgrade even though we only just got 50Mb/2Mb speeds a few years ago. I would like to see better and faster Uplink options. Still no IPv6 support yet. I recently asked for a cap increase due to our overages, they up'd me to 100 for free. I haven't seen or hear of punitive lower usage caps for users who refuse to bundle. I've never bundled and will never! Only Internet services is needed from C1. Been good for me over the years. There are some areas that do need improvement though.

50gig cap

They have the lowest cap i have ever seen. 50gig on a 50mb connection then overages. I keep their old 10mb plan so i can use the internet the way it is intended without the worry of being raped in overages. And no i do not download illegal stuff, just netlix, hulu, and youtube with a family of 5.

Cable One actually has customers? How in the world does someone get 60 million and expect to gain customers this late in the game. Most of the systems they own are so old as to need complete rebuilding.

that is exactly what is happening a majority of the Cable One systems are being rebuilt to 860MHz or 1GHz as about 90% of the systems are at 550MHz. I know that two systems in Oklahoma have already been upgraded to 860MHz in the early 2000's (Ardmore, Altus) and that I believe that Roswell NM is also 860MHz and then Boise ID and some other Idaho systems are 750MHz along with Sioux Falls. It is nice to see cable one rebuilding their systems as they have been running some 550MHz systems as high as 591MHz in Texas with analogs that high on analog 85.

Re: Customers

Rumor has it that new CO plans will be announced around June 3rd. They will be getting rid of bandwidth usage limits, aka no longer charging that absolutely ridiculous $.50c per GB overage.

Rumor is that they will have guidelines of 300GB-500GB/mo. And if you consistently go over it, you will be encouraged to move to a higher plan. But that should keep most people happy.

Looks like the consumer outrage got to them. Many account reps and customer service people were getting very irate customers. I moved to CenturyLink DSL 40/20 plan after my Cableone rep basically told me they were a better deal for me. I've pushed up to 800GB/mo (I have a google drive account that I sync to various items) and CL has never given me a complaint at all. I'm quite happy with them. I was lucky that they ran fiber to my local DSLAM that I am about 600' from. I typically get 37mbit down and 15mbit up. Something I wish Century link would do is actually set the VDSL2+ configuration to 42mbit down and 22mbit up so the actual throughput actually got closer to 40/20. Something I admired about cableone was that when I had a 12/1.5 plan, I actually got 13.5/1.6 actual. Which wins praise.

Again this is just a rumor. But watch for an announcement including a 70mbit plan.
