story category Cablevision Adding 15 More HD Channels
Across entire market by August 1
11:54AM Wednesday Jul 02 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: competition · business · cable · HDTV · Cablevision
Cablevision this morning contacted me to note that the cable company is bringing 15 additional high-definition channels to their iO TV digital cable lineup. According to the company, these new additions will launch over a five-day period starting July 28 and will be available across Cablevision’s entire service area by August 1. The additions bring Cablevision's total HD channel lineup to 60 channels. "Unlike our phone and satellite company competitors - we don't charge any extra equipment or programming fees for HD," spokesman Jim Maiella reminds me. Ten of the fifteen channels they're adding:
Nickelodeon
WE tv
AMC
Animal Planet
The Weather Channel
Travel Channel
FOX News Channel
Discovery Channel
Hallmark Movie Channel
FX
The remainder will be announced later this month.

Was thinking the same thing, no extra hardware charges for HD, but in order to keep getting the 7 - 8 channels they just moved from analog to digital required me to pay for another box ($6.50) and some other fee ($1.50) just because I now have a second box.

On the Direct Tv first box is free even if it's a DVR each box after that is $4.99. The drv fee is $5 for any number of them.

well in comparison, directv makes you pay for HD, then on top of that for extra hd channels you have to pay, then on top of that you have to buy the freaken HD box for 300 dollars, then on top of that you have to pay for the dvr portion of it seprate. The cable company doesn't do that.

The only reason that I have directv it's because we have 4 boxes 2 in NJ where I live and 2 in PA where my parents are, 1 account.

That's technically illegal (definately against the TOS). That is like me saying that I am absulutely pissed that the local cable co is moving to digital because the illegal analog cable hook-up I have had for 8 years won't work after Feb.

Olympics!

The other channels not listed will be NBC channels carrying the Olympics. I can't see any cable provider not having all the NBC channels in HD for the Olympics coverage. CNBC HD, MSNBC HD, USA HD, Bravo HD, etc. That would be my guess.

K thanks, looked but didn't see the HD breakdown. So that means USA HD will be on the list then, since Cablevision doesn't have that channel currently.

no extra fees but

they have been taking away tons of popular channels from the regular programming lineup and you still have to pay the same price. Cablevision has some nerve to throw that line in, a little self righteous if you ask me.

Re: no extra fees but

Cablevision is my provider, and they are a bunch of Money Grubbing Shysters. They have killed my personal favorite HD channel, Treasure Channel, along with a couple of others that had become my fav's. At the same time, they raised the rate and all the while claiming I had the best service out there.
Adding the Weather Channel in HD doesn't make up for all the programming, both SD and HD, they have killed.
BTW, I have 2 HD DVR's, IO service and the Silver tier and pay $90 a month. What a rip-off.

Yep! CV should keep your channels in HD just because YOU want them. It doesn't matter that maybe you were a handful of people that wanted those and they ended up paying MORE than what it was worth. But yah they should have kept them so YOU could have something to watch.

And your package price is cheap compared to what some areas are for cable. But yep they should have to give it to you for $40 a month huh? Get over yourself! their out there to make money if you don't like it take your damn business some where else- chances are they'd be glad to get rid of you anyway.

Verizon charges the monthly fee for the HD box just like Cablevision, but doesn't charge for the programming. So who are the referring to when the refer to the phone company competitor? Verizon's fee structure is for HD is the same as cablevision.
I would sue for making this false assertion. There should be a class action lawsuit against cablevision, with settlement that they truly have to provide free HD to all their customers by either broadcasting all HD unencrypted or by providing the HD boxes for free.
Too bad I'm not a CV customer, but its ok as I'm soon (hopefully) going to be a fios customer.

they can try to get around by saying a digital cable box is needed and the HD is a free add on to that.

Yes they do charge more for HD. You need a HD cable box and when I called them I said I need one standard and one HD box they said one was free (only for a year) but after that it would be about $5.50 a month. The HD Box cost $6.50 a month. So there is a $1.00 monthly extra fee for HD on IO.

The information you were given was incorrect. They offered you the free SD box because you don't have any boxes on your account and they just removed analog channels from your area. The HD box costs the same as the SD box. It doesn't matter what one you get.

And they didn't say WHICH PHONE COMPANY! It could be ANY OF THEM!

And you can sue them all you want but i bet you $1mil that you don't live 1 anywhere near their area to have to deal with them, and two you wouldn't get anything but maybe 3 months free PROGRAMING which they already give away free for HD and a higher cable bill in the end.

Maximum

@bell.ca

Huh just because your tv doesn't mean you can recieve those channels.

learn a little more info about your tv. a tv that has a QAM Tuner is capable of receiving the stations as long as the provide, provides you with a the adapter and card for programing for the tv. with out the adapter and card you'll only recieve the STD broadcasts. Cable, Sat, And Verizon all can provide that for you upon request.

Now the big no no is that the tv manufactures don't really put to much into the adapter slot so 3/4 of the time it doesn't work, you won't have access to the interactive guide or any of the on demands. once again that goes for all providers.

Now as far as HD goes:
( NOTE: ALL PROVIDERS REQUIRE A BOX FOR HD )

DTV is 10 bucks a month extra for hd.
depending on what package you have you'll be limited to those channles only:

Family has 10 hd channels
Choice has 32 hd channels
Choice Xtra has 35 hd channels
Premier has 60 hd Channels

Now for Dish

HD with Essentials is only 10 more a months
with top 100 you get 28
with top 200 you get 33
and wth top 250 you get 39 hd channels

HD with Ultimate is 20 more a month
with top 100 you get 35
with top 200 you get 40
with top 250 you get 45 hd channels

or the "best" package for hd
all hd channels " all 45 of them " for 30 a month
regardless of package, excludes ultimate top 250, all hd channels are included with top 250 ultimate.

now Verizon's FiOS service

HD is also free with FiOS but you need to get the HD box so it can recieve the hd signals

A HD Box is 10 a month
A HD DVR is 16 a month
A HD Multi Room DVR is 20 a month

Last but not least Cablevision

HD is FREE WITH CABLEVISION

There is NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE for an HD cable box either

As far as packages

Family with iOe will give you pretty much all the HD channels except for the premium HD channels like HBO, SHO, etc ...

Then you have Silver and Gold which add in those premiums.

Hopefully this breaks it down for you. so you people can stop freaking arguing already.

as far as Treasure HD goes lady you may want to check channel 724

for those of stuck in the analog age suck it up get a box the picture quality is better anyway. stop whining that your losing channels cause it was eventually going to happen.

If I remember correctly for each analog channel removed, 15 digital channels can be added or 6 to 8 HD channels can be added, ( Don't Hold Me To Those Numbers ).

From what I've seen on DirecTV's national Weather Channel HD channel, they have a different version of the local forecast for HD. It should be interesting to see if Cablevision gets a truly "local" forecast on TWC-HD or if we get the national one that they have on DTV right now... only time will tell I suppose. I can't imagine they don't have an HD weather star yet, but maybe that will come after they get more carriage?

Yeah, well...

As long as the new channels aren't in the crappy, jerky, pixelated, overly-compressed SDV that some of the "HD" channels they have now are.

Glad to see Discovery HD finally making the lineup... a few weeks too late for the "When We left Earth" series that was heavily hyped for HD but seen by Cablevision folks only in SD, though.
