I think it was 3 and there are MANY, MANY that reported full upload without any issue. There's no indication at all that there's anything malicious about what occurred to those couple of individuals. In fact, none of them ever came back to say it happened again once the contacted CV to get it immediately corrected.

Not NewThis isn't new....we have had 30/5 for a couple months now.
It may not always be 30/5, but compared to what i see other companies offering - i'm happy with it.
I can't get DSL (also my 4th house where DSL is not available to me), FIOS isn't going to be at my house any time soon (industrial zoned, and only maybe 6 other houses on the whole road), so it's what im stuck with.
Just tested @ testmy.net (test id: O3CHR5I62) and got 3.2Mbps up. this is with bittorrent running, capped @ 100KB/up. Not bad.

Not new - but 'improved'The "5" down isn't really new - since BOOST was announced that was the target "up to" speed. What's different is that most people seem to be getting more out of the upload - my 'normal' upload (outside the optonline.net domain) has seen a bump from 3 - 3.4 to 3.8 - 4.2 - it would seem that they've tweaked the network a bit.
Not earth shattering - but nice nonetheless.

this is nothing new..advertising what they already sell for the extra $10 isn't really worth mentioning..I think it's +$15 if unbundled. $29.95 + 10 $49.95 + 15
The $29.95 rate only applies to 6 months or 1 year depending upon whether you bundle with video or voice. I'll assume you get screwed after the year is up... to $49.95+boost fee which may get you a $5 or $10 discount if you bundle voice and /or video with the internet and their respective higher rates, which begs the question, after 1 year do you switch because your not saving all that much with cablevision?
** Why does it look good to investors in terms of NEW customer acquisition numbers at the lower rates rather than loyal customers at the lower rates? Is there some magic formula for writing off charges for advertising / promotion / favorable tax breaks that nets the company higher "growth"?
I'll take one final dig at cablevision before I move on to Verizon... Given the node fiasco's of the past.. can you really expect close to the 30/5 caps for the WHOLE YEAR round? Not likely.
Would be nice for Verizon to up the ante on their speeds though sometime THIS year.. their 20/5 is $49.95 less $5 when you bundle to overpriced voice, or their equipment/franchise gouged pricing video. Given their price structure Verizon rates are very similar to non-discounted cablevision rates.. on as much of an apples to cranapples comparison as you can get. One has VOIP & Node Sharing, the other variable taxes/fees/surcharges and less full featured calling plans/cableboxes, but relatively rock solid internet at the lower bundled rates, you pick your worms with your apple. Verizon has $95 bundle plan for 1 year too.. but will end up at around cablevision's un-discounted price when you factor in taxes/fees/franchise/additional cablebox/etc/etc.. the plan comes with the most basic of calling features as well.. Also its a 1 year contract with early termination fee (WHAT?!)

Given the node fiasco's of the past.. can you really expect close to the 30/5 caps for the WHOLE YEAR round? Not likely. That's a very location dependent assumption, and in a large percentage of subscribers, inaccurate. I switched from DSL to OOL late in 2005, when they had announced 15/2 standard (even though it took 5 months to reach my location). From the day I installed, I got 'rated' speeds - first 10/1, then 15/2 when they rolled it out. Since I upgraded to BOOST, I've gotten consistent speeds with it. Proof: » /testh ··· 87/fd827So, at least in my area, I consider it highly likely that I'll get BOOST speeds year-round.

sounds rightI was uploading a 25 Mb file last night, and it went at about 500 ko/s, that around 4 MB. Not too shabby.

Re: Follow the linkYou are right. I forgot about that. I don't have Boost myself, just OOL. All this marketing makes you make a mistake like this. Of course, one can put website on non-standard port, but it is ugly. So, 128Kbps limit on port 80 is not so great.

What happens if you setup using another port? You get capped or they block?

Re: Follow the linkI have never followed this issue myself, but here is the post that probably answers it (they block proxy ports): » Re: [iO] Boost amity harborBut if someone uses new non-RFC port each time in all sub pages, but a main page served by capped 80 port is light weight, it can work, unless they do more robust traffic-shaping based on actual content of a request. Of course, I will probably stay away from such website as user.

They removed the 128Kb/s limit a few months ago. You can now upload at the full rate on 80.

What good is itbah no static ip with port 80 open.

Re: What good is itSo, call them and ask them to close port 80 for you, or use a dynamic DNS service and C Name records.
I fail to see how your post relates to a "problem"...

Oh no I guess you'll have to upload at 5 mbps on port 81 instead of 80. Someone has to type three extra characters, dirtyping.net:81 instead of dirtyping.net, so you can use a server on a residential connection. I FEEL SO BAD FOR YOU! In reality, I don't. Because you're not supposed to run servers off your residential connection. It's one thing to find a way to run a server off your residential connection at its residential price and abuse the hell out of it, but it's another to actually expect them to hand you the tools to break their TOS on a silver platter.

what made the upstream finally perform as advertised?I thought cable internet speed caps were configured at the modem as part of the modem's configuration file downloaded via TFTP during initialization. Assuming this is the case, why is it that when users were upgraded from 10/1 to 15/2 the increase was instantly where it should've been, when users got 30/2, the speeds were also around where they should've been. Yet when the upstream on boost was boosted to 5mbit, users only got around 3.5-3.8mbit upload. This even though their modems were configured for 5mbit upload. Now suddenly users are getting the configured 5mbit speeds, even though nothing changed at their modem. Any idea where the change could've been made? It'd be interesting to see what cable modems on other providers would do if they were set for 5mbit upload. I'm pretty sure most modern cable modems can do 5mbps upload?

Oh boy, cable "increasing speeds" again - I'm so excited! What is it this time?
Is it a set cap below what I could transfer a month on unlimited 3000/768 verizon DSL?
Do they send out abuse notices only to certain people who live in areas with overloaded nodes in the name of "ensuring proper network performance for all users"
Or do they do the smartest marketing gimmick/scam in the book, advertise a certain high speed but in fine print put that it only lasts for 60 seconds, and have the NERVE TO WRITE IT OFF AS A BENEFIT!
Oh I can't wait to see how this will be.
Cable ISPs don't upgrade their network to increase speeds anymore. They use one of the above tactics and because nothing else is available with the same high speed(those who play fair don't offer the high speed to begin with), people put up with it.
I may be wrong. The real reason they get away with it is because 90% of their customers see the high numbers/WE'RE THE FASTESTBESTEST!!1 but in reality have absolutely no clue what they're paying for.

port 80I'm not positive of this, but to the poster who said they removed the port 80 128kbit cap - i believe your right.
I'm looking through my modem config - and where it used to be, it's not. I'm not positive that it's gone (they could be doing shaping else-where)....but they most certainly did change something around.

Re: port 80No matter all the butt licking Cablevision fan boys (cough employees) here say, you still cannot host on port 80 with static IP and have at least a 1mbps upload.
They will cry about saturating bandwidth for others, meanwhile OOL is being offerred at speeds of 30mbps and 50mbps. People are streaming and downloads all kinds of crap all the time.
But they will still bitch since some people here want a measley 1mbps upload with static IP address.

Re: port 80Uhhh.....
first, OOL does NOT offer a static IP.
second, it's 5mbps UP - NOT 1mbps.
third, they claim it's offered at 50mbps - but you can't get it unless you know someone.
I'm also not an employee, nor a fanboy - but i go for logic. Logic says that when boost came out and i looked at my config, it had the cap for port 80 in it. Now - it does not. Logic....not fanboy.
