Cablevision Bumps Free Wi-Fi to 15 Mbps
From 3 Mbps/1.5 Mbps to 15 Mbps/ 4 Mbps
by Karl Bode Tuesday 14-Jun-2011 tags: business · wireless · Cablevision · wireless
A few years ago, Cablevision decided they'd spend roughly $300 million to not only upgrade their entire footprint to faster DOCSIS 3.0 speed (allowing 100 Mbps service), but also on a Wi-Fi network that provides free Wi-Fi to all Cablevision customers. Plugged largely along commuter rail lines and at train stations into New York City, the service coverage area continues to grow. According to a Cablevision announcement today, the service is also getting faster. Starting today, the network will deliver downstream speeds of up to 15 Mbps and upstream speeds of up to 4 Mbps -- up from the service's previous speed of 3 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream. "With this increase, Optimum WiFi not only blows away 3G and 4G cellular data speeds, it’s three times faster than the average wired residential broadband service across the country," crows company VP Kevin Curran in a statement.

If only....

If only they'd put some hotspots in my town. We have none at all. I go to our neighborhood swimming pools - nothing. Our playgrounds - nothing.

And it's not "free", it's included. People pay for this service.

Re: If only....

its still free. You're price for service didn't go up for this. Nor did anyone else's. So yes; basically it is free. And maybe they're covering their core area with the most customers FIRST before expanding out of that area.

Haven't Noticed Yet

I have not noticed any changes yet but I'll have to do some testing. The theoretical maximum they could run is 54mbps as their nodes are 802.11g not 802.11n. However, I doubt we see anything faster anytime soon. This upgrade brings them up to basic OOL's 15/2 service.

Not to mention that 3G/4G works when moving. WiFi does not. No way you can use Optimum WiFi on a moving train.

Yea, I noticed they chose not to use the word "coverage" in their comparisons also. Cablevision is the absolute worst when it comes to false advertising and misleading lingo.

Kudos Cablevision

WOW - Just tested with my iPod and ROKU (on VUDU) and they both show a solid 10Mb+.

Kudos Cablevision.

Re: Kudos Cablevision

I've got Fios now and I'll never go back to cable (Fios is just a superior product, IMO) but this is very nice perk for Cablevision customers. If the coverage area is decent then those are some great speeds to have while on the go.

If by on the go you mean staying at a local cafe for 30 minutes, sure. Otherwise, 3G/4G is the way to go.

a superior product? cable has just enough room for growth as Fiber. The only reason that VZ decided to go fiber is they do NOT share it. That's the only perk to them and they decided to boost the speeds a little bit. Nothing big. It's the same big Red that has been in the business for YEARS and will always. And remember they follow everyone else in terms of how they conduct business. Caps are soon to follow.

Re: Kudos Cablevision

Hey Einstein, have you ever had FiOS, OR Cablevision? No, so why exactly are you refuting his comment for? FiOS blows away OOL in every department. Cablevisions antiquated TV SUCKS, their software is slow as shit, its totally 1990's. Their lack of HD on-demand is ridiculous, most people have major fluctuations in internet speeds at various times of the day. You should keep your opinions to yourself when your talking to this guy who has ACTUALLY HAD BOTH SERVICES.. I have had both also.

Enough is enough!

Come on people... do we really need to be connected 24-7... At some point it is OKAY... REALLY IT IS... to put down the stupid "Smart Phone" or the laptop, or the tablet and look around and enjoy life.

We're missing "life" around us, because we keep our eyes peeled to a little 3.5 x 2 screen or whatever size it is.

I have an iphone 4, a crackberry, an ipad 2 3g and a macair with a mobile hotspot I couldn't be any more connected... yet I chose to leave those things behind.

My philosophy has changed dramatically... work will always be there no matter what, so I leave the crackberry and macair behind.

The ipad I have it loaded with games to play and magazines to read when I'm traveling... and when I'm on personal events, I make it a point to leave my iphone behind in the car.

If I miss a call... well I missed a call, if it was important, they will leave a message or call back. What did we do before mobile phones well... we waited until we got to a payphone.

I doubt anyone mentally stable will go sit in a train station on long island for 3 hours in the middle of winter just to be connected, or in the middle of summer in 100 degree weather.

To make a long story short... Let's live life people!

We must have a lot of mentally unstable people at my office then. Some of these people go to extreme lengths to always be connected. We have loaner aircards for when people need to travel, 99% of the time they use them when they are going on vacation so they can be connected in the car. Alot of crazies out there. I have to admit though that I too am too connected and dont take enough time to enjoy life. I have really been trying lately though to put the tech gear down and just relax.

Re: Enough is enough!

Man I know how it feels. Trust me I love gadgets and little things that make noise.

I started to noticing a pattern... when I'd go out to events, instead of interacting with people I'd be replying to emails or if I'd go to a baseball game I'd miss something because I had my head down looking at the phone.

Not anymore. Who care that I am at a baseball game and I am not enjoying it because I am updating my location on FB... Clearly the people on FB don't care, because they aren't there, so maybe I should.

I try to stay "disconnected" when possible....but I make a significant amount of my side money by being available right then and there. I charge a premium (I've answered a call at 3 AM more than once) for the ability to fix most things right then and there.

So while I would like to be "disconnected" more then not....I'd wind up losing out a nice chunk of spare $$$

As a 'recovering' overly connected nut I agree. Yes I do still have ability to work anywhere anytime but I schedule disconnected time to focus on a task, person or just nothing.

FCC

If the FCC had use it or lose it terms on all the spectrum warehoused by various carriers and other non-participants, it would be infinitely easier for Cablevision to buy some spectrum and set up a true wireless network in their footprint.

as this quote may be true, the spectrum hold by AT&T and others, they would of used it, in some way or another they would put it to use some where, so that would actually work..

and im not talkin about them usin it to expand there network which wont happen, they would just say ok we r using this one, and this one, and this, oh and this one, kinda like a little kid take all and wont give

Re: FCC

When I have tried to use it in the past I have always been better off going into setting on my iPhone and disabling wireless altogether because it was never strong enough to pull in anything.

Would be interested to see if this actually works, since I still have an active account I will give it a try!

There are more costs involved with a cellular network than the spectrum. Not to mention some expertise needed.
