Cablevision Bumps Speeds of Standard Tier
Users Now Report Pushing Past 20 Mbps Downstream
Users in our Cablevision forum indicate that Cablevision has bumped the downstream speed on the company's standard tier to 20 Mbps. The tier, which costs between $45 and $50 for many users, previously offered speeds of 15 Mbps downstream. The tier's upstream speed appears to still be at 2 Mbps. We've dropped a line to Cablevision to confirm the move, and to see if there are any additional changes planned by the company -- who is still working on getting some users back up and running after Hurricane Irene. The shift comes as Cablevision recently took heat in an FCC study for being one of the worst offenders when it comes to delivering sustained broadband speeds during prime time.

I'm still switching to Fios when it becomes available in my area.

Unless you're in Riverdale or Throgs Neck, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for fios. CV ain't that bad. Could be worse. Could have TWC or Comcrap. Just saying

Actually Riverdale will be getting it last because of its location; Fieldston too. Verizon trucks have been spotted running fiber optic cable on and around the Grand Concourse near Poe Park-which also happens to be near the CO that services my area-so I think I'll see Fios sooner than anyone in Riverdale will.

Im with you on that, Cv speeds is no consistent at all, although I have to say its faster then DSL when I had it. But DSL was consistent all the time and cheaper. I would love to give FIOS a shot, been waiting for a loooog time, hey Verizon give urban Brooklyn a chance

You'll get it eventually. I've heard from Verizon technicians I spoke with on Saturday they're close to offering it in my area (I've only been waiting 7 years).

This is just to make them look like they are improving speeds.
I'm a current user and I've seen no improvement, I'm subscribed to boost the 30/5 mbit plan and I'm very lucky if I get 15, most of the time it's between 10 - 15, on regular OOL I was never able to pull more than 6 -8mbps, worst cable broadband for speed, their speed claims are lies.

I have had nothing but speed issues over the last year. On Memorial day weekend I had them out 2 or 3 times. Finally they gave me a DOCIS 3.0 modem. However since the hurricane my speeds are anywhere from almost 3M to 8M no matter when. Just now I ran 4 speed tests to 4 different sites.

I am not sure if maybe it is hurricane related and will come back when they finish making repairs.

Or if their oversold node is just back to it's sucky self.

Them moving from 15 to 20 mean I am just that means I will be getting less then half of the downstream I pay for ALL the time instead of getting a bit more then half.

If it wasn't for the hurricane I would probably call and make them come out (I am off work this week).

Probably wont bother then as I am not taking any more time off of work to babysit them.

30/5's been upgraded. Take your D2 cablemodem in for an exchange to docsis 3... you should be getting 50/8 for the same price. Boost is no longer 30/5.

Haven't notice it here

My speed tests still come through at 15/2. However, I have yet to reboot my modem since a brief power outage Sunday morning that lasted a minute.

Update: I reset my modem to factory defaults and rebooted. Ran a speed test from NetAccess and I am now getting 23077/2049. That is running through a WRT54G V4 with Tomato 1.28. My modem is an SB5100. Sweet!

upstream ratio

SO the down to upstream ratio gap widens, contracts and widens again...

15/2 ---> 20/2 (ratio of 7.5:1 --- 10:1)

Not bad (FREE upgrades are good for competition, but understand Verizon already fluffed their symmetric and entry level tiers... 15/5 gets 20/6 and 25/25 gets about 30/26. Perhaps if they bumped the upstream to 8mbits this would push verizon on the entry level tier.. but then of course you need to bump the 50/8 to 50/12 - 15..., 101/50. If this sparks a response for additional Verizon fluff, all the better

right now (in theory as the tiers go up, you'd expect the trend to contue to get more symmetrical):
20/2 10:1 (expected upstream compared with industry peers is 3-5mbits)
50/8 6.25:1
101/15 6.73:1

Re: upstream ratio

Upstream channel bonding under DOCSIS 3.0 is still an engineering challenge. Even getting upstream to work correctly with DOCSIS 2.0 is seemingly difficult. I look at the DOCSIS specifications, »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DO ··· d_tables , and wonder how come the giant disparity between theory and real world experience. I hope they figure out how to correct it.

Really funny? or really sad?

That a 5 Mbps speed increase is news.

Pathetic but still far better than TWCNYC...

...and that's downright sad.

Not in the West

30/5 tier - Billings Server
OOL West is left out in this one it would seem. Highest I have pulled from their 30/5 Boost tier (no Boost Plus or higher here) is 22/5 internally on the network. Highest I have ever pulled externally is 15Mb/s on the 30/5 tier.

Standard tier is still 15/2 here.

Guess lack of competition limits us to this. Best match in Butte is CenturyLink 7/1 service

This just proves that cable companies will only go as far as they have to (read: we're losing unsatisfied customers in droves). when offering faster speeds. In the northeast, FIOS is accelerating their build regardless of the current strike & labor issues (in NYC). This has cablevision on the defensive in NY (their core market). Where I am, I've seen more Verizon trucks roll than cableivsion trucks. This enhancement speaks to that trend. If you've got centrytel/comcast/at&t as your next competitor, you're screwed. Sorry... but broadband competition is concentrated in major population centers such as NYC.

From my perspective, I'd say this is looking good.. by the time my 2-year deal is up with Verizon.. they'll have to have something better come along to ensure customer loyalty.. maybe 35/35 or more at the same price

Sorry... but broadband competition is concentrated in major population centers such as NYC.

You only speak for East Coast but you're leaving out LA/SF in West, Chicago in Midwest and Dallas-Forth Worth in South.

In Chicago, you can get in some areas RCN cable and they have no hard cap presently as far as my knowledge goes.

And as far as wireless service goes, more competitive and less overutilized (unlike NYC). Trial services always start in smaller urban centers (sprint xohm, att's lte, etc). U-Verse is not FIOS but try living in small towns like Dubuque, Iowa where services are lame yet thats kind of places where new jobs open. In Dubuque, my only choice is mediacom (the worst of all cable providers) or qwest (now centurylink).

No speed increase here as far as I can tell.

Also, I realize that this might be a dumb question, but why is it that there isn't a single standard for rating internet speed? The ISP sells accounts rated in Megabits, all the speed tests give you the results in Kilobits, and every single internet client and bandwidth monitor shows you the speed in Kilobytes.

Not to mention that every single speed test I run gives me lower results than actual, real-world usage. Most of them give me a download speed of about 8933Kbps, which works out to 1116K, but yet I usually get around 2000k or higher when downloading from real sources.

not that hard to move wtihin brooklyn.. time warner sucks and probably always will even when FIOS come roaring in... to steal market share

btw, just noticed that cablevision still has to update their site.. the entry level package still shows 15mbits..

»optimum.com/online/why/f ··· l_faster

maybe CV is waiting for a special occasion to announce officially the higher speeds.
