Blog points to passerby photo as evidence
(old news - 01:35PM Monday Oct 16 2006)
tags: fun · Fiber · competition · business · cable · telco
The battle between Cablevision and Verizon has been bloody on Long Island, NY, the two companies endlessly bickering in the press over which service is better: Fios or Optimum On-line. So it's interesting to see IP Democracy point to a passerby photo that suggests Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan's address in Oyster Bay, Long Island has a live Fios connection. The photo in reality doesn't prove much, simply a fiber splice and an old mailbox - but it if true would be an ironic twist to what's been a very heated PR battle.

that will be something!

I seriously doubt it, but if he does, even for "research" of the competition, that show how much of a threat is fios for them

Wtf what a lame photo... Most ever town I been on had a Fiber Splice on a pole thats not something that tells you if he has Fios or not..

However on the "research" part if he does I wonder what he thinks of it...

I also want to add I had a Fiber Splice in front of my house for over 3 years.

Umm, WTF? Do people have nothing else better to do?

From the article. . .
a photo of an active Verizon FiOS connection point above Chuck Dolan’s home mailbox
My nieghbor had an active cable connection above HIS mailbox for years. He just dropped DirecTv and got hooked up at his house last week!

If they would have gotten a picture of the ONT on his house, that might be a little more interesting.

Either way, I'll just bet whoever took that picture and made a story of it has a wild social life.

This is stupid

I really don't see the big deal. Maybe he wants to understand what he's up against and decide what to do to compete. I run an internet radio station and I listen to other internet radio stations, should someone make a news story out of it?

Why would he want to use his own company's clearly inferior product!

Why inferior? If speeds of OOL Boost/Ultra are not fast enough for him, he can just have LighPath ran to his house, which is far much faster than the fastest FIOS you can get (residential FIOS, at least).

Slow news day

Or maybe Verizon just converted his POTS service to FIOS. Slow news day indeed.

Self-Explanatory?

If you were running a big company like Cablevision, and competition came into your area, wouldn't you want to test this competition out rigorously? I would hope he's a Fios subscriber for any package Verizon offers.

SO you are saying that a Chariman or CEO would be smart enough to know what they are testing? LMAO.....BRB gotta go put a 4-Sale sign on that bridge I am trying to unload. IMO I doubt if he has it, it is for testing purposes, but what do I know.

Actually, his input would be on par with most of his subscribers that are not tech savvy. Geeks and techies will always go for the latest and greatest but it's the average Joe Modem and Suzy Spreadsheet that make up most of the market.

Say you owned a business, let's say selling "widgets". You're the only widget maker within 100 miles, and you've been making widgets for people for 10 years. All of a sudden, another widget maker suddely appears, and begins taking some of your customers and business away. This new widget maker starts a massive ad compaign to illustrate their alleged better widgets.

You're telling me that you'd ignore him, and you'd do nothing, just keep making the same widgets you had been making all long?

Keep doing that, and you'll be out of the widget business.

LOL....yeah, well if it was a Multi-Million or Billion dollar company the "widget maker" would have people testing it for him while he is at one of his 10 vacation homes!

Re: Self-Explanatory?

Let me tell you something about Chuck Dolan. Unlike the CEO's of the Enron's, Tyco's and Adelphia's of this world (former CEO's that it), Chuck cares about his company and the people that work for him. I know, I worked for Cablevision's IT organization for 5 years.

Chuck is a smart man....this is the guy who actually gave birth to Home Box Office folks. He is considered a true pioneer in his industry.

If Chuck does have FIOS, and knowing him he does, he himself is using the hell out of it.......not some of his "other employees"....although you can bet that there are others on his team testing it as well. For Chuck it has been and will always be about trying to put the absolute BEST product out on the market, having the competitive edge.

No one has...or does, work harder than Chuck. There are very few businessmen left in this world who truly are gentlemen....Chuck is at the top of the list.

Or...

...perhaps he has a direct fiber connection to the OOL network? Time Warner offers it here.

However, does anyone else think those are awfully decrepit looking mailboxs for the house of the CHARMAIN of Cablevision?

I hear the black plastic mail box with the reflective number stickers is very "In" right now with the 3 million dollar per year execs.

Stupidest comment ever. Being a Chairman and CEO of Cablevision, he can get all of their services such as iO Gold, OOL and OV for free. I think all of their employees get that perk, not just the executives.

On the other hand, if he did subscribe for any services from Verizon, he will actually have to pay for them.

What does the Insight Communications CEO use

I've always asked this question in relation to the CEO of Insight Communications. For years they ( Insight employees ) swore OOL didn't offer the speed that they in fact did. Even after I showed solid proof time and again. Insight's corporate headquarters is in New York. Insightbb of course doesn't service this region. So I've asked time and again which provider the CEO and other Insight New York employees use in that region. As far as I'm aware no one has yet to decide to play honest and come clean with an answer.

Dolan lives on a private road up in Bayville and they have a private police force that stops you if you try to go down that road. I doubt that picture is real.

I call BS.

I want to see more proof. Maybe he lives out side of their foot print. That fiber very well could be going to his neighbors houses. He probably told them to go with Verizon.

I work for an ISP and when I lived in our foot print I suggested our competition to my next door neighbor. I really didn't want to be his personal 24/7/365 face to face tech support.

Do you have proof? Can you get Mr Dolans fios bill?

I highly doubt he would subscribe to fios. If he does have fiber to the home it is more than likely a cable vision fiber optic line. I know If I was ceo of a company, I would have several optical carrier lines to my pad

I don't see the big deal.

If there is more than one High Speed connection available I get them both as a back-up.

Very unlikely for both to down at same time unless something major happens very close by.

The Dolan's have FIOS installed. No, I'm not kidding. I have a contact that works for Verizon in FIOS deployments in the NY area. I don't think that's odd at all as many entities purchase/use/test competitor products. As an example, FedEx delivers to UPS every day.

Hopefully Dolan will get FiOS TV, see the channels that are not available from Cablevision at any price, and decide that we CV customers can be privileged enough to see them, too.

LOL at all the posters

Guess what that picture is so grainy you can't even tell if its a Fiber line or a copper line.

That splice box looks just like the copper trunk splice sitting above my mothers house and the one sitting in the alley two blocks over from my house that has aerial lines running to all the houses on the block.
