Q2 subscriber additions beat most analyst estimates

Cablevision this morning posted their second quarter earnings. The company notes they added 120,000 digital video subscribers, 52,000 broadband customers, 81,000 digital phone subscribers and 7,000 basic video subscribers, all of which beat analyst estimates. Stock jocks had worried that Verizon FiOS competition would hit Cablevision harder -- though with FiOS now entering the NYC market, Q3 could be a different story. Cablevision saw a 69% decline in second-quarter net income from a year ago; a company spokesman tells me the disparity was due to a "gain on affiliate sales in 2007 when we sold Fox Sports network New England."

Digital video

Of course they added digital video subscribers -- Cablevision took away a bunch of analog channels, forcing people to subscribe to digital video if they wanted to continue receiving those channels.

Technology marches on. Analog is going away - and it isn't coming back. To provide all those HD channels everyone demands they have no choice but to kill off analog channels and move them to digital.

Re: Digital video

I'm just explaining why the number of video subscribers went up. It has nothing to do with Cablevision holding off the competition.

Wonder how Comcast is holding up to FIOS? Where I am there's Verizon trucks here ever day converting more customers over. Must have taken about 40-50% of the area by now and it's only been available for about 6 months.

Maybe he's referring to the hockey team(s) and not the delivered picture?

If you've actually watched hockey in HD, and you're being serious, you probably need either:
a) an eye checkup, 'cause your vision is faulty
b) a better TV, because it's not displaying properly
c) a different service provider, because they're not giving you a good signal
d) all of the above.

As hobgoblin See Profile said, and I concur, hockey in HD is awesome.

Makes sense to me

I just ditched my FIOS internet only for the CV triple play. In the end I pay $50+ less for the first year of service than what I was paying CV, Verizon and Vonage. I have to pay the $99 ETF from Verizon but CV even kicked in half of that.

All of this because when I called CV to cancel and move to FIOS triple play they discounted the hell out of everything to keep me (free HD DVR, Free boost, etc). What did Verizon do when I called them? All they asked was if I was sure if I wanted to cancel. I was like "Hell yeah I'm sure". It consts Verizon around 800 to hook me up and they got maybe $320 out of me over the past 6 months.

It comes down to who wants your business the most. In my case it was CV. In a year when my triple play price is up I will just play the game again. It helps that I already have the ONT on my house as well.

Re: Makes sense to me

CV is giving their shit away 'cause they know they've sucked for long now, and FiOS in NYC by 2014 spells trouble.

In today's economic times who wouldn't play the game anyway.

Verizon didn't budge now 'cause it's a new popular product. Let it become as unpopular as a landline and you'll see otherwise.

One Added CV Benefit

CV is installing wireless access points all around the island. There are at least three here in my home town that I have found so far and others where I work in Babylon and along Main Street in Farmingdale. They are free to all OOL subscribers (you signon with your OOL email id and password). Verizon has nothing comparable to that yet.

Re: One Added CV Benefit

didnt VZ put up Wifi before at payphones all over NYC but later take them down? You would think that would be a great use for the copper thats there sitting after they strip the phone out.

You would think that would be a smart most for the telcos.

Just wondering...

Is this "competition" based on FCC data? you know, where if a provider hits anywhere in a zip code/zone, then it's assumed to be everywhere in that zip code/zone? (FiOS is still building out in most places.)

Generally, people leave one provider for another provider because they're unhappy with the first provider: price, quality, whatever. If Cablevision keeps their customers happy, why would they leave for FiOS or anything else (especially for marginal benefits)?

The next quarter is always going to be an unknown, and probably different.

one vs. the next

$89.90 vs
$95 + taxes & fees

Granted the services aren't exactly the same but similar. Those on a tight budget will go for the cheaper service. With $4 gasoline, who's not on a tight budget in NY Metro. Verizon will have a problem of $135 vs $100. (yes, about $40 added svc charges for triple play with Veizon). This is due to franchise and POTS taxes much lamented about in other threads.
Still, FIOS is a great service, but not without its flaws and at times erroneous billing. Still, make sure you get the best deal you can whichever company that may be, and hold them to high quality service (get what you pay for). If that means year over year switching from one provider to the other, so be it.

hmm

The cablevision area wide wifi thing could be ahuge advantage to cablevision. Verizon will have to come up with something similiar. i was looking to move to fios til li heard this plan. Internet everywhere on long island is more important to me then better tv quality since i use the internet a whole lot more.
