Cablevision lets us know that the company is launching a new caller ID service on the TV this week, that should be showing up for all users by tomorrow. The new functionality is only available to customers who bundle both iO TV digital cable and Optimum Voice phone service. From the company:
When an incoming call is received, customers will see the Caller ID display scroll into the upper left corner of their screen. The display is present for approximately seven seconds, allowing customers to decide if they want to take the call while continuing to watch television, without interruption or having to hunt around for the phone. Customers who do not want to receive Caller ID messages can easily disable the function by tuning to iO TV channel 630.
Cablevision sent us a few images of what the new ID "bug" (their words) looks like:

It's a small feature, but the company is trying hard to differentiate its bundled services as it does battle with Verizon FiOS. Verizon is expected to offer a similar callerID service sometime next year. Outfits like Time Warner Cable and DirecTV have had this feature available for some time, so both companies are a bit behind the curve.

Wow

I thought this has been available everywhere for ages? Time Warner Digital Phone has had it for well over a year and I believe you can even get this service with DirecTV.

As long as it was a cable company with Scientific Atlanta set top boxes and a knowledgeable technical department.

Operators with Motorola set tops, or Comcast does not have caller ID on screen. Motorola set top boxes appear to be too limited, or possibly too difficult to program for, so no one's ever written an applet for Moto gear. It's in the works but I'll believe it when I see it.

The smaller MSO's with the better hardware like Cablevision in this example go the extra mile. While they offer many features some people might not need (games, caller ID, enhanced TV, etc.), MSO's need to really pull out all the stops to differentiate their product from the competition.

Bravo Cablevision, I always did like you guys. Cablevision subs are a lucky bunch. I would subscribe to them in a heartbeat if I had the choice in my area.

This is nothing new.

This technology has been available since at least the mid 90's.

This technology has NOT been available since the mid 90's.

If you're talking about the end result of the caller ID on the TV, then you're talking about something else. DirecTV has a phone line in the box and it's very easy to trigger than on a per box basis when the box hears an incoming call with caller ID information. It's really no different that a caller ID display box.

What the MSOs are doing is taking two technologies on convergence and having them work together.

If your PHONE gets an incoming call, at the central office or head end, one piece of hardware is talking to another to send the information down the line, hitting the TV.

Therefore, the technology has NOT been available until recently.

I think it was a little easier to implement on Dish, just a simple caller ID unit within the box itself. The cable boxes can not be hooked up to a normal POTS phone line and be expected to show caller ID, it has to go hand in had with the cable companies digital phone service.

Yeah, but not the same as this.

Dish does it just because it is plugged into your phone line. It has a callerID box built in and displays it on your screen.

The service offered for cable voip doesn't require you to have your cable box plugged into the phone line, since that isn't even possible with 99% of cable boxes leased out there.

This sends that callerID data directly to the cable box over the cable's network.

So yeah, Dish and DirecTV have had it for years, but not the same way.

IPTV had this when I worked on project for Bellsouth and it worked well. The only draw back was you could not have Privacy Director and the caller ID.

1 - 2year discount offer -promotions avail NOW.!!

want to get a better rate,,, yes, all the broadcasters rates are going up in 08, but only by a few $$ .. with Comcast looking at cablevision, Verizon is trying to capture many customers with great offers and locked in rates, cable is under pressure loosing 500+ customers a day to Verizon, the only way they can keep their customers is through the disconect /retention department,,, usually they can only offer a 6month promotion, BUT,, if you call or schedule a installation with Verizon,, have a work order number... "" you call that department with cable,, tell them you want to disconect, tell them you are going to Verizon,, and give them the order # from Verizon-FIOS of all 3 services.. they then can offer you a 1yr. ( NEW ) promotion,, or in some areas out in LI, a 2yr is available..
want the lower rates before they go up- call today, get the work order number from FIOS - on ALL 3 services,, and they can make the offer, or else they can not do it..
the pepople who work there are under a lot of pressure, so much pressure, they keep having high turn over every month, due to the large amoutn of disconections,, look in the paper, every week for the past 6 months, they are allway hiring,, why is that,, they don't want to keep employees, it's cheeper for them to get rid of them and hire new for less,,, they will do what ever it takes to get rid of an employee after 6 months in that department, I guess right now - they are only focused on "trying" to keep customers, rather their employees...

Re: 1 - 2year discount offer -promotions avail NOW.!!

Where did you get your numbers of 500+ customers a day to Verizon. Not everyone can get VZ FiOS and won't. That's plain and simple.

Your numbers are very very out of the ball park. And AT$T and VZ rates will go up as well as we already seen. So much for VZ being cheaper for TV. Remember Cable providers OWN a lot of tv networks. They get what they want and thats the $$$$ or don't let others carry the channels.

ever wonder how many customers per day verizon is losing to cable tv and it's phone offering when you made up this post because customers move from provider to provider all the time they both have retention departments and have since the late 1990s it has been the standard of the way business tries to figure out why customers are leaving instead of simply letting them leave to another provider a lot of people want a lower price so they are going move around while others wont so I guess it works both ways..

Didn't Zenith or RCA TV's already do this in the 80's?

I am sure I remember TV commercials touting this feature.

I think Direct TV receivers could to this in the 90's.

Glad to see another cable company is finally catching up to 10 and 20 year old technology.

This is different than the satellite caller ID

You need to have your box plugged into a phone line for it to work with satellite. This doesn't need that.

Satellite boxes always have to be plugged into a phone line.

Yes, I know there are a few rare occurrences that don't require a phone line (like in an RV) but 99% of sat boxes are plugged in to a phone line all the time.

What I'd like to know

If you have cablevision DVR service and your recording a program, will this banner pop up on your recordings? just curious, guess I'll find out in a couple days. I like the feature but would be slightly annoyed if it appears on my recordings since it would be pointless when I'm watching it later.

Was There When

Re: Anyone know?

I suspect not, unless they got a significant price reduction in the license cost. That was the barrier when it was first being discussed.

My guess is that CV ended up writing its own app, especially since they brought (or were planning to bring in when I was last involved) their CID databases in-house recently, too.

So that explains why their caller ID data is not very good... they can't spell the names of callers very well at all... Verizon also shows the names of the owners of cell phone numbers... Cablevision only shows "Cell Phone, XX" where XX is the state abbreviation.

This feature is nice when it works. Hopefully they make it work 100% of the time, but the "scroll" doesn't come up every time there is a phone call. I made 10 test calls from my cell phone, and only 3 showed up on the screen... I know it's early, but right now, the feature isn't really... usefull since you can never be too sure if it's going to work.

The way these soft phone providers do caller ID pisses me off. For example, TWC pulls up the name of the phone line. My lines are set up to send JUST the number and not the name. However, since the line is listed in the directory, but not in the book, companies like TWC have opted to circumvent the way CID is SUPPOSED to work rendering my right to not transmit my number invalid.

This is one of the times where I would like to see the FCC do it's job and make services like this standard.
