Comcast offers something similar with VoiceIf you get Comcast Voice you also get access through the Xfinity Connect app to your number anywhere to send texts, make calls, and get calls. Each Comcast account login gets its own number for use with its app as well..
So I have 2 numbers - landline and the VOIP app. No extra cost, lumped into the service.
This sounds like the same thing but more expensive.

-would be better if they provided existing customers of optimum voice an app for android/apple smart phones that allows you to use your existing OV line and phone number on wifi/LTE along with your home phone - the same way magic jack provides a smartphone app along with the hardware device to use on your home phone.

Is this right?"the service will offer non-Cablevision users unlimited calling, texts and voice for $30 a month "
Wouldn't that be data, texts and voice?

Doomed?Good for them for changing it up a bit - the more competition the better.
That said, Cablevision's wifi is absolute shit. They inject ads over the top of all content, and the service has, in my experience, been significantly slower than my existing LTE or 3G connection.
I'm surprised that they have no GSM/3G/LTE roaming. I'm also surprised that they'd ask me to pay more as an existing subscriber for access that I already have (to their wifi).
I'm primarily surprised that they're not using GNA/UMA on the client side - my phone already supports this.

Who cares? Why on earth would anyone downgrade their "smart" phone service, from one that works anywhere, to requiring a WiFi connection?

I have my son set up like this for freeI used someone's IPhone 4 which they didn't need added talk tone and now he has a Wifi phone for $0. Works well and he's only 12 so he doesn't need a full blown cell phone. On a college campus or a place like that I would think you would almost always be close to an open Wifi.

Wi-Fi calling has absolutely no benefitsI see no benefit to Wi-Fi calling when I already have unlimited calling and texting on my Verizon Wireless iPhone. And it works in places where Wi-Fi isn't available.

Re: Wi-Fi calling has absolutely no benefitsI get pretty good coverage inside buildings here, even in Holyoke Mall down in the basement food court. There are a few pockets of the mall that are dead spots but the carriers around here are pretty good about in building coverage. Another minor dead spot is Tower Square at the Dunkin Donuts I have to open my Dunkin Donuts app before I get in line to before the signal cuts out as its spotty down there. No Wi-Fi as its just counter service there with no dining area.

I just checked all four of the big four major carriers (VZ/AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile) and none of them meter airtime or texts anymore. They're all unlimited talk and text. Again I see no point to W-Fi calling.

young people already call over wifi for freenot may see it as an alternative to cellular. but young tech savvy people already well aware of the ability to take a smart phone with no subscription and load hangouts, vonage mobile, pinger or one of many other apps that allow the handset to be used as a wifi only phone for free.

The race between Cable and LTESooner or later, "wireless" will just be data. Who will provide that data?
I could see LTE taking over, where you would only subscribe to a LTE service that would provide data that you then used for talk, text, and everything you now use broadband for, like Netflix. Your home internet would be provided by a CLEAR like service/ device. This is where AT&T and Verizon would like to go, ditching their copper. The problem is how much wireless data costs, but over time that will most likely come down.
Obviously, this would be bad for cable. How can cable react to this? Bulking up their Wi-Fi availability and marketing a Wi-Fi only phone makes a hell of a lot of sense.
The devil is in the software that "seamlessly" interfaces with all those Wi-Fi hotspots. If it can hand off a call between hotspots seamlessly, well, that's a killer-app in my book, especially if hotspot availability is seamless as well.
Yes, you could do this with a cheap tablet and Google Hangouts, but it would not have the software to seamlessly interface with all the hotspots, and you would be logging into hotspots manually. If their software avoids this, it's worth something.

not worth paying for..most consumers can get free voip & txts over the internet without buying them from CV... buying data at hotspots isn't worth $30 a month.. maybe $5 (for noncustomers).. but not $30

But between home work and school that leaves little for Sprint to cover. For others that travel for work or are out in the field far from the city Verizon may be a better choice at a higher cost.

Would expect Sprint fallback for that priceAt least for a limited amount of data. Wifi only is pretty useless. That makes T-Mobile's coverage look good!
