Cablevision Launches New 50 Mbps Tier
And New $100 50 Mbps Triple Play Bundle
by Karl Bode Monday 02-May-2011 tags: prices · business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Cablevision · Optimum Online
Confirming information we received from tipsters last week, Cablevision today formally announced a new 50 Mbps downstream, 8 Mbps upstream tier they are calling Boost Plus. Boost Plus comes with no usage caps, and will cost Optimum Online users an additional $15 on top of the company's basic tier price tag (introductory priced by Cablevision at $30 for 12 months). Cablevision today also unveiled the Ultimate Triple Play, which includes the new 50 Mbps Boost Plus tier, 275 channels, Optimum Voice and a 802.11n router for $100 (more specifically, $99.80) for the first twelve months. We've confirmed with Cablevision that Boost Plus does not have the steep $300 installation fee that comes with Cablevision's 101 Mbps Ultra tier, which should make the tier considerably more attractive to bleeding edge folks.

excellent.
imagine how saturated things would be if the $300 fee was waivered, only for things to get saturated even more now than before with this deal.

Interesting

I'm guessing this is aimed to compete more with FiOS double play, maybe Verizon will come back with a faster tier/lower price.

Re: Interesting

You mean, "compete". Because clearly FiOS TV quality is better and offers all movie channels + faster internet. I still don't see a point of going to this offer unless there's really no other option.

and soon caps when more and more providers move that way.

More Movie channels. LOL. One can only watch the same movie so many times before you start memorizing the damn script. Most channels are just that- nothing but reruns and especially the ones that think they need to air the same old shows- TV One and TVLand, ION. and if any company ads anymore damn LifeTime Channels we'll be all screwed with reruns of their crappy movies too.

Meanwhile in the real world

We're stuck on Frontier crummy 3Mbits "pie in the sky" DSL, Verizon "we hate copper" DSL and TWC "we love the customer's wallet" at higher prices and lower speeds deals.

This is a good deal

What they are offering is an excellent deal - at least for the 1st 12 months. If in Cablevision territory, I would jump on this pkg.

Just got it about 3 hrs ago. instead of getting 42 down and 5.2 up. I am now getting 38-42 down and still 5.2 up. The price is the same as what i was paying for regular boost.

May want to ask them to provision a docsis 3 modem to get your full tier during *NON-PEAK* usage times. I've also heard in some cases they provision a *NEW* proprietary tap (or amplifier) for 100mbits.. let's see if that's necessary for the 50mbit tier.

This new triple play tier is analogous to the 35/35 tier. I think it's a slight edge on price to Cablevision on this one-- yet you can potentially get *MORE* down if you get the docsis 3 modem than the Verizon tier. Will be nice to see the side-by-side once they provision it right.

HOW?
8mbit is a far cry from 35 on the upload.

yes have the motorola docsis 3 modem

CVsub

@optonline.net

that's all well and good.

That's all well and good but they cannot even get 30 meg service right and to think 50 is going to be better. I think not. Unfortunately, I had top tier lineman tech tell me that 30 meg service is a desperate attempt in most CV areas. The equipment and plant , in most cases, unable to handle the service. In my case, it took 3 months to finally have CV cave in and offer me a Docsis 3 modem for constant 15 meg service. 30 meg service was really 18 meg service. This was after "working on the line" for 2 weeks straight was never to obtain 30 meg speed back which at one time I had on a constant basis.

I would seriously question if the 50 meg service would work as well. Sounds great for advertising but practical application not so right. I wish FIOS was in the area. Just to bring down my cable bill.

I signed up for Boost service last month. At first I was only getting speeds below 15Mbs. After having them out here a couple times during the first week (I'm an impatient customer), they gave me a DOCSIS 3 modem. Actually, they suggested it. Since then, the speeds have improved to the 20-25Mbs range, but I never get the full 30Mbs speed that Boost promises.

One of the techs admitted "off the record" that Cablevision's network is stretched too thin to support the speeds they're selling. He said that they really need to switch completely to fiber. I liked him, he was a no-BS kind of guy.

Re: that's all well and good.

IT has nothing to do with switching to fiber. Coax and the docsis network has the capacity for what they are selling. They just need to add more frequencies for their internet section and split some nodes. Docsis 3 allows more frequencies above 800 (or what ever the old top number is) fopr downloads and also opens up more possible frequencies for upload.

Nothing to do with coax being used.

For ~4 years I was using OOL Boost consistently getting over 25Mbps (sometimes dipping to low 20s). The last year or so I had it (2009-most of 2010), they removed the cap completely and I was able to obtain upwards of 30Mbps pretty consistently.

For the last 4 months of my service, they replaced my modem with a DOCSIS3 modem (for a different issue unrelated to speed) and I got ~31-33 Mbps consistently.

I'm confident I would've been able to obtain 50Mbps consistently if I hadn't switched to FiOS in January.

Not saying CV doesn't have congestion issues, but it's definitely not impacting their entire footprint. There are plenty of people that can obtain their full speed. The new speed tier will definitely make me consider switching back from FiOS when my price guarantee is up next year unless FiOS starts matching the download (50/20 for the price of 25/25 would be perfect - I don't need or want the extra TV channels required to get the 35/35 service).

Re: that's all well and good.

I was obtaining the same speeds as you with boost. However, with boost plus I have not seen over 42 down and 5 up yet. I thought for sure I would receive the full 50/8. Speedtest.net usually starts out at around 45 but by the time the speedtest finishes it is at 36-38 and 5 up. I was getting these speeds for a while with regular boost about 2 months ago and than 32 all the time. I think the 50 meg package might be b.s. If someone is getting the full speeds please let us know.

Business packages?

Any word on what the pricing is for this on the business tiers? I'm tempted - my 30/5 is consistently around 33/5.2 and I've got a shiny new D3 modem. Surprised they didn't email/call/snailmail anything about the new tiers.

Posting anon as I have one of those deactivated hackerattacker accounts. blah.

Confused

I'm confused....did this replace Boost? I have boost now....is it $15 over that....or is the $15 I'm paying now cover me? The new triple play appears to be only for new customers?

According to "My Optimum Services" I have boost....nothing really specific....

Working well here...

It's working well here. I had to get a new modem to support the service. The sales rep originally told me I didn't need to swap the modem. I told him I did since I had a DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola modem. He said no, his system would tell him if I needed a new modem. :-/ So originally he was going to ship me one untli his system told him not to. I called back and spoke to tech support telling them I can't get the speed I just paid for and they confirmed I needed a new modem and told me to go to an Optimum Store. That was a pain, but I got it and my speed tests look perfect. Also, my modem is a new Arris Touchstone TM802. It took forever to sync up. I registered it tonight and it rebooted and again took a while to sync up. Any reboots I've done manually since then seem to go fairly quick, so I think it was just scanning all frequencies trying to find the head end until it did and now remembers the channels. Annoying part is I no longer have a diagnostics page, just a telnet interface which is fine, but the password from what I read is something different each day based on an algorithm using the date. Was so much nicer with the Motorola just logging in via a browser. Can't complain about the speed though. This was also via wireless...

Re: Working well here...

These are the early days of docsis 3-to the masses, no doubt they'll firmware update the modem to include these features but it won't look exactly like the motorola web interface. The TM802 looks like a nice voice/cablemodem. They'll probably have wifi N (router) version coming along sooner or later with gigabit ports. Welcome to 2011.. your speed test looks hopeful, but let us know about (speed tests & download/upload speeds) peak usage times over the next 6 months.
