Cablevision Launches Optimum Link
Transmit Any PC or Internet Content to Dedicated Channel
by Karl Bode Tuesday 26-Apr-2011 tags: Video · business · alternatives · cable · content · Cablevision
In February of last year we noted that Cablevision had started testing a service that allowed users the ability to stream any Internet data to a specific channel in the Cablevision TV lineup. Orginally dubbed "PC to TV Media Relay," the service took any PC-based or Internet content (Hulu, iTunes, photos, pirated Golden Girls episodes, etc.), sent it upstream to the Cablevision network and then delivered that content on channel 641 -- via a subscriber set-top box. Users in our Cablevision forum note that the service launched officially earlier this month under a new name: Optimum Link. More detail on the product is available over at the Optimum Link website, which notes the service comes with Cablevision's Optimum Ultra package, and costs $5 more a month for everybody else.

more flies with the Android/Iphone app

streaming channels over the android app will catch more flies(customers) than optimum link (premium). also, there is alot of potential in the wireless / clearwire & lightsquared deal, but I'd risk this not happening if it will kill at&t and tmobile merger.

Cablevision Q&A says output is 800x600, so anything of HD quality will be compressed quite a bit.

The other problem is that a cable node will only be able to stream to so many people on that node simultaneously before an error is encountered for the next user attempting a connection. Won't be a problem if few people use the service. But if the service gets a lot of users, that will be a problem.

I Bring You...The Wheel!

Sigh.

How about letting customers conveniently watch TV content over the internet without having to pay an arm and a leg for hundreds of unwanted channels? You know, the opposite of what this new service is providing, and what the cable companies and content providers are refusing to allow in an effort to save their aging business models. Getting video from the internet to my TV is already a widely available feature without having to leave the local network.

Yawn....Sorry

I really can not get excited by this. With a modern HDMI switching AV receiver you can do this now. Get a graphics card with with HDMI outputs and just run the cable up to the receiver and you have internet content on your HDTV and you don't have to pay a dime. Want to transfer content from your iPhone, touch, or iPad get a 100 dollar iTV box.

Interesting idea...

I tried it and disconnected it. Not worth the $5/month.
Think of it as secondary display for your computer desktop running on your TV screen.
It's a nice idea though. The video quality is not the greatest, but if you are "repeating" streaming video to your TV (like YouTube or Hulu), you are starting with somewhat compromised data, and it does not look all that great by the time it gets blown up on your nice big TV screen. You can more or less accomplish the same thing with a HDMI cable. The Cablevision service just makes it a little easier (no wires, sets screen resolution to the optimum size for TV display, etc.)

* Im sorry your channel 641 and service has been disconnected for streaming copyrighted material.***

i dont know if this is currently a feature but....

this would be better if other CV users could access your feed with a given access code on their cable box.
i could easily send something to a family relative 60 miles away like a video or a picture.
just tell the family member to tune to the specific channel and enter an access code.
this would be a great idea for family/friends who may not be computer literate, have a computer or even have internet.
i can think of plenty other innovative ideas that can be done with these cable boxes, but those ideas would obviously require the boxes to be upgraded from their current first generation docsis modems to something "better" and would also require CV to increase the download and upload speed currently assigned to them.

Cap block

All well and good unless you have a 150 gb cap or worse and need the best quality you can push on said link.

I had to stop using a ton of things because of the recent cap invoked on our household. we have to limit each family member to 1x 45 minute 288p stream per week because of it.

When Verizon started deploying FiOS Cablevision dropped their cap. Cablevision does not suck as much as they once did.

Cablevision doesn't have any caps. Must be one of the few bigger cable internet providers that doesn't have any.

Cablevision is the only cable company that is going toe to toe with Verizon. FiOS made Cablevision drop their cap and Cablevision made FiOS drop contracts. In beautiful Newark NJ one can get 100/15 from Cablevision and/or 50/50 from FiOS. Take that KC KA.

Re: Cap block

I would love to see them drop the cap entirely or raise it to like 350 or more.

As it stands the kids can't even use their 360 like they like to because of it. They have to exchange 1x 30 minute chunk of programming per week for a ~350mb demo. Most of the stuff they want to DL is in the GB range and they have to save up weeks worth, and that means they can only DL a single ~1.5gb demo a month.
