Competing in the muni Wi-Fi market or just battling FiOS?
(old news - 02:02PM Saturday Nov 10 2007)
tags: competition · business · wireless · cable · Cablevision
Cablevision has begun to offer a new treat for its Optimum Online customers in certain areas of rural New York. The company installed what essentially amounts to limited municipal Wi-Fi equipment at no charge to the city. This allows their customers to access high speed Internet service at various outdoor locations throughout the region. This area is approximately two hours from Long Island where Cablevision rolled out a similar system earlier this year. Their goal is to continue to compete with FiOS by providing additional services to their customers.

let's see where this goes

That's nice, but too limited an area. Verizon Online used to include complementary WiFi throughout most of Manhatten but discontinued it.

Because it conflicts with its then new EVDO service, and the wifi service was ONLY available to VZ DSL subscribers (a business decision).

I think based on the OOL forum, users are looking/wanting more speed than wifi..but hey what do i know?

"Rural"?

Pleasantville, Pelham, Peekskill (all in expensive, trendy Westchester county), not more than 30 from NYC, right next to the Bronx, are "rural"? LOL!!!

"Rural" just barely begins north of Rockland county on the west side of the Hudson and Putnam county on the east side.

This is nothing more than giving the rich another perk, it does nothing for those in any "rural" areas.

Geez, Pelham even borders the Bronx...Rural, that's funny!

Well, I can understand why...not much need for it in farm land and there are tons of commuters from these Westchester towns that have PDA's, laptops, whatever...sure would be convenient at the train station.

Re: "Rural"?

There is nothing special about this product. If you look at the availability maps on the website, the wifi is only available in a small, very limited footprint. Part of this network was installed in my town, it's available on two streets near the shopping areas. But that's it. My town is 4 square miles in size, and Cablevisions Wifi only covers 2, small streets. So while it's not that they did that, they definately aren't spending much money on the projects.

Re: "Rural"?

What is an area that CV now covers do people still consider truely rural?

Do you think they would need to cover they focused on putting this on main streets along with other centers in towns within their service area where your average local office jockey and salesperson would most appreciate it? Also, if they indeed put in a full blown 802.11n network, if it is not one router and all repeaters, the signal would extend to about an 50 foot radius if there are alot of obstacles. I believe an 802.11n network will be used not only due to being the latest certified, but also comes with compatible for the latest encryption standards out of the and widest band of frequencies it can operate on.

And it is not as if CV is giving this away, you will most likely need to have an OOL account to sign on and if campus Wifi is much of an indication will not be the fastest either but enough for folks to quickly check their email and Google Maps while commuting. As for other OOL customers they will now know where to stop for a 24/7 hotspot. If you have not already known OOL has been hosting hotspots within the Staten Island Ferry terminals for years now. It is nothing mind blowing but neither short changed as it is also in my town center, last time I checked its still NJ. So it has apparently grown since the inception of this article.

There are many things about CV and cable companies in general to be pissed at but I don't think this is one of them.

Re: "Rural"?

Maybe the wireless will be better than there 15/2 and 30/5 which is more like dial up. LOL They do stupid stuff like this instead of fixing bad areas.
