| Re: When Free means Fee! Your DSL is slow. FiOS is 10/2 with a contract. OOL is $45 with no contract. They cost the same as any other cable company, $45 for regular internet, $60 for faster speed. Regular speed is 15/2, faser is 30+/5. I'm paying $63 + modem rental for a Comcast connection that isn't even as fast as the lower-end Cablevision tier. Seriously, they're overpriced? THey provide more for your money!
I for one think doing a muni WiFi network for customers of your service is a fine idea, and 1.5 Mbit symmetric service wherever is enough to get most things done. Most AT&T/T-Mobile hotspots don't get up to that speed. Basically the premise is this: with FiOS you get internet to one location. Sure it's wicked fast but it's also a little on the expensive side and once you get out of your own WiFi coverage you're gone. ith CableVision you can move into an "extended service area" where you still have internet, without having to buy any extra equipment. Sounds like a win to me.

| Re: When Free means Fee! In which case I applaud your thrift. I like watching movies streamed from my own router-attached hard disk, or maybe backing stuff up online, or downloading large MP3 albums (for the college radio station I work at). So basically I take all the speed I can get, as long as the rice is below, oh, $70 a month. I also use VoIP over the connection, and the savings of VoIP alone pays for some of that conection cost. | |

Optimum online is 15/2 which beats 10/2. The difference is 2 dollars in price. When you are talking about bundling discounts it is cheaper for most people since they usually want cable TV service and voip. I don't recall people getting a bundling discount with Verizon if they chose voip over POTS. FIOS definately wins out in the higher speed tiers though.

In this case you have to be paying for a Broadband Connection in order to use their Wi-Fi Network. Therefore there Wi-Fi Service is not free! They can make it an additional fee in addition to your OOL fee if you want.

This is a very nice perk. You don't see AT&T or Verizon offering free EVDO/HSPDA, nor WiFi. (And Starbucks doesn't count AT&T fanpeeps) -- Linux Haters Unite!

Looks like a decent addon, like the WiFi that Bell offers here at my local Starbucks. The sad part is, while OOL > WiFi, Bell Starbucks Wifi > 1Mbps DSL.

| | | | | OOL is fine, I've been very happy with it for 10 years. better than my corporate connection. | |
|
| | | | How is 15/2 service with no caps. or $60 service 30/5(that allows web and email servers) not decent. Even fios does not allow you to unblock web and email ports.
Cablevision is prob in the top 5 behind fios and the small ftth companies.
Its prob one of if not the best cable company.

| Been Waiting My area got the WiFi nodes back around July 4th. Near my office in Babylon the nodes have been working and I was able to log in and utilize the service long before it was "officially" launched. It is nice to see the maps now showing where the service is available. There are a few spots around my area I was not aware of. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. | |

| | great perk This is a great perk for cablevision customers. Cablevision nows as of right now they cant compete speed wise with fios (until docsis 3) so they are doing other things to compete.
Now in their area its fios with better speed and tv clarity or cablevision with slightly lower speeds and tv clarity but free wifi for their customers in their area.
As of right now id rather have the free wifi. It rocks being able to access the net with my ipod touch anywhere i go for free.

| familiar isp; In just about any area across the country.. you can sample service from just about any isp.. through the universal provider... LINKSYS! Not that I necessarily advocate using someone's unlocked, un-passworded, un-encrypted wifi router.. but it is out there for the taking. So, you can sample both FIOS & OOL by wifi remote control so to speak. | |
