Sure 3G is limited by the providers because they are cheap SOB's and want to give you the least for the most. But Wifi can have the same issues the more people hooked up the less there is for everyone. But most people don't really understand this and just look at the price. All this is a moot point in my part of the world for Cheyenne state of the art WiFi out in the city is Taco Johns, McDonalds and the county Library. -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption

NiarlanExcelsiorPremium join:2002-11-09 Manville, NJ | Cablevision Cablevision does deserve a lot of Kudo's for what's its done in the NE for internet....I used to have them and loved the internet access and dependablity. But the compression on the HD channels was what drove me to FIOS. Can't beat the PQ on FIOS..
Gotta love good competition though !

| | hmm This is one time i think cablevision can gloat. with att and verizon getting rid of unlimited internet this helps me a lot since i use their optimum wifi all the time on my iphone.
Considering they have automatic sign on now with their hotspots i am on their network all the time.

| make it apples to apples there are several reasons why 3g won't be as robust as a wired connection for several more years. the walled gardens of wireless broadband aren't a fair comparison. what would be better is to compare that AT&T and Verizon's network wifi is not as deployed as Cablevisions. Especially Ny Metro area which is the majority of their footprint. | |

Would in be interesting that while the Teleco's are beating each other brains out and screwing over their customers WiFi deployed by business and such end up biting them in the ass. -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption

| Yeh it's not a valid comparison. Cablevision is bragging about coverage in one large city. So what? Go anywhere in NYC and you can probably hit several wifi connections.
Can you, say, sit on a train and maintain a connection as you pass from one hotspot to the next like you can with 3G?
And who wants to drag their laptop around everywhere they go? Anyone who needs that kind of connectivity probably already has a smartphone
Marketing fail.

| | | | Re: make it apples to apples Just so you're aware, the trains from Long Island into NYC were the very first areas deployed for Cablevision' WiFi. Then was the ferry coverage from Long Island to Connecticut. Right now, the Wifi is mostly in commercial and populated areas where people would go and hang out or along main roads. It's not that much in the residential areas yet. | |

| It aint ONE City If you had looked at the map link, it would be obvious that CV does NOT cover Manhattan (which is what most people term NYC, but is only the island of Manhattan) with the exception of Radio City, MSG and other CV owned properties in Manhattan. CV made a deal with other cable carriers, Comcast and TWC to share access at the few specific NYC spots such as Bryant Park (NYC Library), Citifield (the Met's stadium) sites that they also cover, in exchange for allowing them access on CV's much much larger network.
CV's network stretches from So. Connecticut to half of NJ, covers all of Long Island, southern NY state, and most of NYC's outer boroughs (Queens, Bronx, Staten Is., Brooklyn). They have deployed WiFi at most transit stops, along major transit routes, and almost every town-in-the-footprint's main street and recreational areas. -- »www.Warpstock.org

glinc join:2009-04-07 New York, NY | LOL Then VZW or AT&T can throw the coverage maps at cablevision. Cablevision doesn't even cover the entire NYC area and are mocking 2 companies that have nationwide coverage?

| | | | Re: LOL This is apples and oranges.. its quite stupid. How bout Verizon post a map of voice coverage to Cablevisions? lol The stupidity of advertising. | |
|
| | | | | Re: LOL Verizon Constantly comapires oranges to apples with fios. Verizon has a much larger customer base then cablevision so why the constant advertising about how many customers they have and things like that.
You cant just say oranges to apples when the other company also does it.

patcat88 join:2002-04-05 Jamaica, NY kudos:1 | CV wifi In my experience, 3G is faster than CV Wifi most of the time. 2 out of 5 bars for wifi means your not going above 1 mbps. Plus 3G works everywhere, CV wifi is very spotty (on purpose, CV said its not universal). Without directional antennas and high tx power adaptors, CV wifi is painful to use even in LOS of the AP (400 feet away LOS, a parking lot). CV wifi is basically a municipal wifi system, with all of its troubles. If you had an omni mounted on your roof with a high tx power card, it will be perfect for you.But few do. I think each user on the AP is speed capped to 2/2 also. You don't get full DOCSIS bandwidth standing under the AP.

1 edit | The only "NICE" thing The funny thing is, everywhere I go I have a solid internet connection. (Home, The Office, campus, coffee house...etc.) When I'm not there, most of the time I'm on the way. The added benefit of free Wi-Fi for use on my I-pod touch when I seldom need it is a nice bonus (and one of the few reasons I'm sticking with cablevision) ** I have yet to be truly satisfied with a 3G experience (playing with friends phones) for it to warrant the same price as my 15/5 connection at home. I'd love a "Droid" or "i-phone" but I also love my $52 a month cell phone bill. ** Do we really really need a constant internet connection at all times. If you need a blackberry to get your work related e-mail fine but I shake my head at those who buy shinny $300 smart phones so they can check their fu*king farmville status on Facebook... * I hope I don't offend any "data-plan fan boys" but i know too many people with nothing in their name except a phone. ... look at what the service providers in some Asian countries offer their customers and its cheaper! Its enough to make you spooge! ** I'll look again in another year or two.. Oh and does anyone still ask women for their phone number? or have we all become a bunch of digital stalkers -For the record I have an LG ENv3 (no web, just text) -sorry i know i ranted
** oh and its free(ish) | |
