Cablevision Network DVR Sees Limited Deployment
Still a few months away from full deployment in, around NYC
by Karl Bode Monday 03-May-2010 tags: Video · business · hardware · alternatives · bandwidth · cable · Cablevision
During their fourth quarter earnings conference call last February, Cablevision stated that the company would be deploying their network-based DVR sometime in April in a limited fashion. Cablevision has now confirmed to Light Reading that the company has deployed a limited version of the technology in a few select homes -- but Cablevision says they're still "several months away" from a broader deployment across the NYC metro area. The service was of course delayed by lawsuits from the entertainment industry -- who worried about losing control of content and ad revenues. Ultimately, Cablevision hopes to move away from the physical DVR entirely. "By year-end we intend to cease buying physical DVRs as we begin deploying our network-based DVR solution throughout our footprint," said Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge earlier this year.

this could be great

Network DVR would be great if they can minimize the delay in controlling the show. The ideal situation would be the network DVR has all content recorded for you and available for 30-60 days.

Re: this could be great

They could then name it On-Demand, since all of the content would be available "on demand" from me.

Re: this could be great

I haven't used on-demand in several years, but when I did have the wonderful "feature" it was garbage: limited number of shows available (whatever agreement Comcast signed with the networks) and the delay between pausing and ff or rw was unacceptable. Fix those two problems and a network DVR will be a huge success.

Network DVR

If as I have heard you can't skip the BS ads I will have to find another way to watch tv.

Re: Network DVR

Tivo would see an uptick in interest and sales, or people would embrace the idea of a HTPC/DVR solution more readily.

Re: Network DVR

and then you have the problem of going to SDV and or all Digital. You'll need some equipment from the MSO.

A network DVR won't be as fast & convenient as having it locally on a physical DVR in your home. And if, as likely, that you can't FF thru commercials, it will be total bomb that people won't pay extra for.

Re: Network DVR

I think you are giving normal people too much credit. I watch shows now with no commercials .I will not pirate shows so if the only way to record them nd watch them later is to watch commercials then i will watch them.

Most people wouldnt care.

Network disaster?

Am I the only one thinking this network DVR will be a disaster?

Imagine everyone getting home and watching recorded TV. Ondemand was fine because not that many people watch ondemand, but DVRed shows? This will kill their network.

I think when they had that free VOD PPV Night the system ran out of room real fast.

Cablevison has a lot of SDV as it is now and this will just put even more load on the system as well.

If SDV is being used it might actually put LESS load on the network, since you would be recording content at the head end and thus have at most one tuner per viewer. It would also serve to normalize any SDV channel traffic, though for linear channels it would offload a bit to SDV.

That said, CV does have a VERY low subscriber-to-node ratio so I hear, and with the right compression and an 860 MHz system (that's what they have, right?) they could make this work.
