Cablevision Planning Netflix Competitor
Worried About Verizon/RedBox Streaming Joint Venture

Comcast recently launched a Netflix imitator dubbed Xfinity Streampix, with the apparent hope of satisfying users who might ditch cable and go Netflix only. The service requires that customers subscriber to both Comcast TV and broadband services, and doesn't appear poised to be a non-customer standlone offer anytime soon. Cablevision is now expected to follow in Comcast's footprints. “We believe that Cablevision is looking to launch a service similar to Comcast’s Streampix later this year," BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield stated in a blog post last week. Cablevision's motivation, argues Greenfield, is the upcoming Verizon and Redbox streaming joint venture which -- unlike Comcast's Streampix -- is intended to be a standalone product offered to non Verizon subscribers.
