Cablevision Promises Network DVR 'Early Next Year' Though legal fight against entertainment industry may continue.... Despite the fact their recent court victory may head to the Supreme Court, Cablevision insists that their network DVR concept should show up sometime early next year. "We won a monumental case and all the things that we thought we could do, the court agreed with, so we're ready to go to market with that product," says Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge. Rutledge says the devices are being rolled out "on our campus next week... We have advised all the copyright holders that we are going to do it. We'll be doing a real consumer trial in the relatively near future." Both Cablevision and Time Warner Cable had trialed eliminating the DVR and putting content on the carrier end, but the entertainment industry quickly filed suit, fearing a loss of content control (and ad revenue).

RARPSL join:1999-12-08 Suffern, NY | Query about will be accessible I currently have a Set-Top DVR and can schedule the recording of any show I want.
- If/When CV offers Network DVRs, will they record EVERY Show (and how long will they save the recording for)?
- What provision is being made for those shows that they do not have on their "automatically record" list?
- If they pick and choose what THEY want to record and allow me to schedule private requests for those shows not on the list, do I still need to indicate an interest in those that ARE on the list or do I get automatic access to them?
- If I need to indicate an interest, do those shows count against my allocation of recorded shows?
These are just some of the questions I have before I am willing to turn my DVR in for their Network DVR offering.

so if you change to lets say fox news 6:55 and miss part of your program you can rewind it back to 6:00
| | | | It may be the same as on demand.
Will it be SD only?
Maybe even extended on demand with top shows on each network be put on there.
They may not have the bandwidth for this.
Cablevision does not even have Extra Innings HD or HBO, SHO, MAX west feeds in HD as well all the other HD HBO, SHO and MAX HD channels.
A full home DVR with 4-5+ HD tuners is a better idea.
They do have the weather star hd in beta testing so they may be first to have this as well.
| | | | No - They will only record content that someone flags as wanting to be recorded. They will NOT record everything or arbitrarily record anything that is NOT flagged by a customer. For example - if 1000 people flag American Idol to record, they will only record it once and ONLY those 1000 will have access to the content. So it will look like those 1000 recorded it, but to save space only one recording is necessary. If you delete it, you are effectively only deleting your "flag" to view the content.
No provision necessary as only content that is flagged as wanting to be recorded is recorded.
They won't pick and choose anything. See previous.
Not sure how the "indicate an iterest" works.

Thank you for your explanation of how it would work. So long as they will allow me to request the recording of any show (even a niche one) I can see it possibly being a viable alternative to the set-top DVR. The question is how long will they make it available and what are the deletion criteria. As to "Indicate an Interest" I was talking about a scenario where I am allowed to have X Hours of recorded content but there is a list of shows they will automatically record (since it is popular) where you just say "I want access to the show" and since it is on the list, it does not count against your private space allocation.

| | | | Re: No commercial skip. . . . . There is going to be something like this that will render the service useless. For me, that is the number one feature of a DVR. | |
| | | | | Re: No commercial skip. . . . . IT wont be useless if you cant skip the commericals. You have a dvr so you can watch things that you missed.
The thing that will make this useless will be the price. They have to make this cheaper then the extra dvr price.
| | | | | | Re: No commercial skip. . . . . For me, it would render it useless*. I was stating my POV. Obviously others benefit from such features as you mentioned. | |

Don't worry, this product will be just like their Switched Video product... it will tell you that "your program is not available to be viewed"... just like the countless "channel not available" messages that Extra Innings customers had to suffer with this past season.
Rutledge is an idiot, so is Cablevision as a company. They need to ADD MORE CHANNELS. They haven't added a single SD channel in a year... (english channel that is). They are adding lots and lots of HD, but there are plenty of SD channels that we don't have, but should.
