Last year we explored how Cablevision was interested in helping the MTA with their goal of offering wireless broadband on all NYC-metro area trains -- given the company already offers Wi-Fi at most train stations in their markets (you can find their coverage map here). Cablevision has now filed a proposal with the MTA to offer Wi-Fi on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuter rail trains. The service would be free to existing Cablevision customers -- with a "reasonable access option" for non-Cablevision customers. Under the deal, Cablevision gets to essentially market its service to all NYC-area customers -- and the MTA gets a network for commuter lines that Cablevision says they can have up and running in twelve months.
