Cablevision Quietly Expands Network DVR Availability Service Now Available in Connecticut After a long but successful legal battle against broadcasters, Cablevision quietly launched their network DVR service (aka the RS-DVR) back in January in portions of The Bronx. The service stores content at the network head end, eliminating the need for local storage on the DVR -- and Cablevision's currently offering test customers 160 GB of storage for $11 a month. Light Reading directs our attention to the fact that Cablevision appears to have quietly expanded the trial, the company's network DVR website noting that the service is now available to Connecticut Cablevision users. Customers must subscribe at a minimum to Cablevision's Family Cable tier in order to qualify for the service.

Cogdis join:2007-03-26 Floral Park, NY | I'd rather have a regular DVR. I haven't seen this in person so I'm just guessing, but I'm picturing this being similar video on demand which could mean remote commands will lag. Also, I see that it says you can PAUSE live TV for 15 minutes (they should at least triple that), but there's no mention of rewinding or fast forward within that buffer. Does it support that?
If they're going to charge the same price as a DVR, I hope I'm wrong and it works better than I'm imagining. Otherwise they should lower the price or increase the storage space.

| Re: I'd rather have a regular DVR. The advantages are you can watch on any Box in the house and set up the recording on any non-DVR box. You can record 4 programs at once. The disadvantages are that you can not rewind live TV, you can not add an external Hard drive and there will be at least some lag for commands, not enough reports to know how much on a regular basis. If you already have a CV DVR it is only 5.95.
If you pause you could simply start recording when you get back and at that point you should be able to rewind, you should always be able to Fast Forward. In order not to be in violation of copyright they have to do things in very specific ways. -- Warning, If you post nonsense and use misinformation and are here to argue based on those methods, you will be put on ignore.
