Provider announces lofty ambitions
(old news - 09:17AM Monday Jul 21 2003)
tags: satellite · business
To help the company better compete in a market filled with bundles and mega-ISP's, New York Cablevision has apparently decided to get into the satellite business. The company is apparently hoping to rival DirecTV and EchoStar with a satellite network of their own, which perhaps could then be bundled with their Optimum On-line broadband option for those un-interested in traditional cable. Rainbow 1, Cablevision's high-power Ku-band satellite, was launched into space last Thursday.

Why dont you look in your local phone book or browse this site's reviews???

I find it amaizing that people are able to find dslreports.com, sign up and make an account, but are unable to find their options for ISP's.

Well, it's an old issue, and perhaps you've solved the problem. But I see that someone from another provider has come in with a solution to your directly asked "where to go" question. I suggest that further discussion between you take place using our Instant Message system.

Re: bad move

If you're curious about the technology behind CV's satellite, there is some interesting discussion in the OOL forum from a CV exec that is involved in the satellite project:

Dave or Dish? Niether!

KU or not, its gonna be nice to have an alternative to Dave and Dish. With them being a regional company versus national, they're going to be in touch with the subscribers a lil more than the other two players... at least for the first year or so.

you can bet it wont be priced competitively as Cablevision customers pay some of the highest television rates in the nation.

on another note. will people continue to get gouged on OOL if they take CV's dish product?

They're certainly not in touch now.

the more players the lower the prices hopefully!

that is probably good news since if they become big then the consumers may see a price drop in the satellite sector...

The prices only INCREASE on anything that Cablevision touches. You'll see

Where my money goes

Now I know why we had to incur the $5 increase in OOL. $1B is a lot of money.

What???

"The new service will be able to offer up to 468 standard channels"

How many transponder licenses do they have for the 61.5 spot?

Doesn't EchoStar already have a satellite there?

Re: What???

11 transponders

and yes.

But what is really interesting is that Echostar doesn't own all the transponder there. They lease six of them from Sky Angel in return for carrying their bible thumper programming. Right now Sky Angel is unhappy with Echostar and is threatening to pull their use of the transponders.

Now Rainbow-1 shows up and gives Sky Angel another outlet to use if they want to.

Nationwide SAT service

Can you say BUH BYE Charter??? I spoke with the guy at CV and he said around OCT-NOV it should be available. He also said the OOL speeds should be even faster with Sat. I don't know how true that is but it did come from his mouth. I wonder what Charter is going to do when CV offers 10/1 or higher for less then what they Charge for 1.5/128. I will sign up for this in a hearbeat. Best thing about it is it's nationwide. Well in the East coast that is.

He's spewing forth BS. even a capped ool modem would be faster than satellite. their upload struggles to make better than 70kbps and a capped modem is 150kbps. there is only so much bandwidth available on satellites thats why most of them have rather restrictive AUP's and FAP's.

Re: Nationwide SAT service

I kinda thought it would not be faster then ool currently. But could it provide the same 10/1 caps as they do now on sat?

No it won't ever be able to provide those kind of speeds, one reason is the speed of light and the latency issues, second is trying to support a large number of users at those speeds...

Another Hughes?

I, unfortunately, have the immense misfortune of not having access to broadband, so I got satellite. I don't know if anybody here is familiar with the current status of satellite on the US, but it all runs off the Hughes satellites, which limits your download rate for only 169mb, and then takes 8+ hours to refill (and often disconnects you during most of those 8 hours). Not only that, but they have the ability to shutoff your internet for up to 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Europe has 12mbs satellite. My hope is that CableVision gets their act together and gives us something that's not such a ripoff as this goddamned DirecPC!

It is amazing!

Funny how they can work on getting a satellite launched, but still can't handle something as simple as running mail servers...
