Cablevision To Launch 50 Mbps Tier Monday
'Boost Plus' to Offer 50 Mbps Down, 8 Mbps Up
by Karl Bode 11:05AM Friday Apr 29 2011
Several insiders have reached out to us to note that Cablevision will be offering a significant new Optimum Online speed tier starting on Monday. Dubbed "Boost Plus," the service will offer subscribers downstream speeds of 50 Mbps and upstream speeds of 8 Mbps. That puts the new tier in between Optimum Online's Boost tier at 30 Mbps downstream, and 5 Mbps upstream -- and the company's Ultra tier, which offers 101 Mbps downstream and 15 Mbps upstream. Our sources had no information on price, and it's unclear whether the tier will have the steep $300 installation fee associated with their Ultra tier. Carriers are still trying to find the sweet spot for bleeding edge broadband users, with 100 Mbps tiers (in part due to price) seeing relatively little uptake so far. Cablevision wouldn't comment on the information, though you shouldn't have long to wait for confirmation.

More speeds they CAN'T deliver....

While it looks nice in their advertising and on their website, any long-term customer will tell you they have problems with being able to deliver speeds on a consistant basis on ANY of their speed tiers...

As usual, location is the key. If you are on a lightly used node, all is well. Get on a very busy node in some areas and prime time speeds will be significantly slowed. Node splits only happen after large numbers of complaints over a period of time.

Not true, my node has 5 customers on it and even with a D3 modem, my nighttime download speeds are awful (e.g. last night at 10PM they were down to 500kbps). A neighbor reports similar issues. Have engaged CV via OOL Direct forum and there's a ticket open, but so far no relief.

same here. had Ultra. Speeds are all over the place. Best ever was in the low 80's. Typical d/l speed was around 40-45.

I call bullshit.. While I've had my share of issues over the last 10+ years with the cable modem it's by far the best option in the area and for cable service the best in the US.

It's not all bullshit. Speaking from personal experience with both services, Verizon Fios has provided more consistent speeds at any time of the day than CV has done. In some cases [with CV], during peak hours, I'm getting 1/6th of my download. Other times, it's close to 100%. I never seemed to have that issue with Fios.

That said, I'm pretty happy with CV, overall. I am cautiously optimistic about this new proposed speed tier. You can read posts of some Ultra users who are having problems, and if you look in the CV Direct forum you can see many thread titles about people on Boost not receiving Boost speeds. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Is that how you feel?

I had OOL but dropped it after the teaser price expired. After they lifted the cap, except for the price, it was OK. I just got a letter offering me $30 a month for a year because I'm a valuable customer.

Others are stating this will take place of boost and not be a new tier.

Also this will require a docsis 3 modem also.

Nothing special about that, cablecos the world over are migrating to DOC3 for anything 10Mbps and up now that quad-channel DOC3 modems have almost reached price parity with DOC2 modems since they quickly recover the small premium via more efficient outside plant and head-end resources utilization.

How about 'OOL Minus'?

10/1 for $29.95 per month, like they had a decade ago. I'd buy that.

I'd probably jump at that too and save $240/year. For that reason alone I doubt they will ever offer it.

I jumped ship for Verizon DSL 7 years ago when CV raised the price to $45/month. So instead of 7*12*30 = $2,520(!), CV has gotten $0 from me. If they kept the price at $30/month, I'd still be a customer.

Good to see, competition is a good thing for consumers. The upload is still to low for me (25/25 with Verizon) but I am sure some will jump at this.

I am tempted to go back to OOL. 25/25 FIOS here too - if the upload was 10-15 I would be all over it... Hmmm. decisions decisions... 50/8 or 25/25

maybe fios will hurry up here, I would take their 15/5 plan over 50/8 which is 15/8 in reality during night time.

I see a problem with every isp with customers you guys complain that they want to increase the pricing for there speeds you guys also have to think it cost money for bandwidth if you want more bandwidth yes you will pay more for it. So stop your complaining that it cost so much for 10+ mbps bandwidth. Yes I know you wont get what you pay for but still at lease you got internet connection right? You know most people are happy to get 512kbps + HSI over dial up connection. Avg customer only really uses up to 512kbps of HSI they basically check email and surf a bit. How I know this because I used to work for a local WISP as tech support.

Re: see here is a problem.

this site and users don't care. They just want the fastest and best internet available at dirt cheap - read- FREE. Most of the users on here don't fully use their bandwidth unless their downloading 24/7 of illegal downloads (tv, music, movies, etc).

Users should be glad we don't have the 3 strikes rule on Internet or more strict caps.

if your going to charge about $100 for that you might as well pack it in already! what happened to 50/15 or 50/50 who's bright idea was 8 megabits upstream at least be comical and make it 11 megabits for 2011.. maybe if they offered this in oh, say 2008?

more than a few days late and many dollars short of competition where FIOS is.

Cablevision had a service back in 2004 or 2005 it was release along with boost, it was ool ultra but not the ultra of today this ultra was a 50/50 connection and at that time they charged 200 a month.

However, NOT docsis 3.0, narad networks (proprietary modulation). This didn't catch fire due to fear of cannibalizing video-- also FIOS was in less than 2% of their footprint. Also, $200 was out of line in pricing. 70% of the country still on broadband below 5 megabits. Welcome to 2011, not much progress, but at least 50% of the country (assumption of power lines & telco lines are present) can get more than "dialup"

jimmy

@cablevision.com
You guys are crazy. Upload speeds don't matter that much. Most people, including myself are just going to jump at that faster download speed. I use Fios now, and cablevisions speeds do vary...but I dont think the speeds can possibly vary that much.

It looks as if boost plus will probably replace boost (30/5)

So from what I can read (on their website):

15/2

50/8

101/15

Though, if they really wanted to make waves (my suggestion):

25/25, 50/50, 150/150 (151?)........(this would require tons of docis 2 for 3 modem swaps and is very unlikely) Doubtful cablevision wants to do that much channel bonding for docsis 3 right off the bat. Baby steps getting 3.0 modems to the masses. Without the upgrade the max spec of docsis 2 is about 42mbits.

Will this cause Verizon to boost their 25/25 because this aligns with a MID-TIER broadband service?
Time will tell.

Called and ordered service. The price went from 9.95 a month to 14.95. I'm an existing optimum triple play with boost. So its only a 4.95 price increase.
