Cablevision Unit to Buy Five Lockheed Satellites

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp. said its Rainbow DBS unit is to buy five satellites from Lockheed Martin Corp. for about $740 million as it expands its satellite television operations.
Under the deal, Lockheed Martin will construct five Ka-band satellites to be delivered between 38 and 50 months after completion of the contract. Cablevision reported the deal in a Wednesday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Rainbow is expanding its year-old VOOM satellite service, planning to offer 5,000 high-definition channels with the addition of the new satellites, the company said.

5000 HD channels? Huh?


Why doesnt 5000 HD channels sound right to me?

Seems all the press releases I searched for on this referenced that number as well...

it's not that at all, voom is primarily hd, cv does not have the bandwidth available on the cable lines to do all that hd, not to mention with satellite they can service the whole country pretty much

Yeah but -- find me 5000 *SD* channels
It will take years to fill that. Even for DirectTV which claims the same amount of channels when it lauches all it's birds by 2007. i have enough trouble finding something to watch on 200 channels
